Career
In September 2014, DU hired Shelly Oberoi as an assistant professor. Subsequently, Shelly served as an Assistant Professor and Visiting Faculty Member at Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai in 2021. Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and Indira Gandhi National Open University are the two government institutions where Shelly also studied. She served as a professor (IGNOU). .

Political career
Shelly Oberoi became an AAP volunteer in 2013 and participated in its various campaigns. Later in 2020, she was appointed as the vice-president of the AAP women’s wing in New Delhi.
In December 2022, Shelly contested for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on the AAP ticket. She defeated the BJP candidate by a margin of 269 votes. Later, the AAP proposed her as a mayoral candidate for the MCD elections. And once again, Ella Shelly defeated BJP candidate Rekha Gupta by 34 votes and became the mayor of Delhi or the first female mayor of the Aam Aadmi Party.
The mayoral election takes place every year. Section 35 of the DMC Act requires that “the corporation at its first meeting of each year shall elect one of its members to be the chairman who shall be known as mayor and another member to be the vice-mayor of the corporation.”
