Very soon you will be able to get a shiny Magikarp in Pokémon Go. It’s probably the main reason you’ll want to participate in this week’s Spotlight Hour.
There are many other reasons to look forward to the event. You will be given the opportunity to capture as many Magikarp as you can, with the chance to capture a Magikarp with 100% perfect IV stats. You can find a preview of the shiny Magikarp below.
Magikarp Spotlight Hour falls on a quiet day in Pokémon Go, but you can still participate in the Go Battle League and battle Tapu Bulu in five-star raids.

Magikarp IV stats 100% perfect in Pokémon Go
This week’s Featured Hour is a great opportunity to catch a Magikarp with perfect IV stats.
Once you’ve captured a Magikarp with 100% IV stats, you’ll have the option to turn it into a Gyarados with perfect stats. While they don’t have much influence in Go Battle League, they can be useful when fighting Team Go Rocket Grunts or in raids.
The CP values that correspond to perfect values of 15/15/15 are as follows:
- Level 30 (Max Wild CP) – 235 CP
- Level 35 (maximum CP boosted by weather) – 255 CP
The wild CP value aligns with your trainer level until you reach level 30, and since the majority of the player base is now above this level, we’ve kept these values for the sake of simplicity. However, these values will be different if you are currently below level 30.
Is there a shiny Magikarp in Pokémon Go?
There is a shiny Magikarp in Pokémon Go.
Shiny Magikarp, along with the shiny version of its evolution, was released in March 2017 as the first set of shinyes in Pokémon Go. Of course, this was a throwback to the red Gyarados from Pokémon Gold and Silver.
If luck is on your side, you can find a Shiny Gyarados in the wild, but if not, you can get one by evolving a Shiny Magikarp using 400 Magikarp Candy.
Remember: Attention Hours only increase the number of Magikarp that appear in the wild, not their glow rate. This means that unlike Community Day, Magikarp’s shiny rate will not increase during this event.

The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! The Out to Play event is currently taking place. You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.
What does the shiny Magikarp look like?
As you can see in the image below, the shiny Magikarp has a full golden yellow covering. This is a marked difference compared to its evolution. Shiny Gyarados has a completely red body.

Other reasons to catch as many Magikarp as possible
Aside from the chance to catch a shiny Magikarp in Pokémon Go, there are other reasons to participate in this week’s Spotlight:
- The bonus for this Spotlight Hour is double evolution XP, meaning you’ll be rewarded for every Pokémon you evolve.
- If you’re a newcomer, this Featured Hour is the perfect time to collect enough Magikarp Candy to fully evolve this Pokémon into Gyarados.
- Tapu Bulu is still available in five-star raids, so you may encounter other players battling this Gen 7 Legendary Pokémon.
- Thanks to Magikarp being a water type, catching a bunch during this Featured Hour will add progress to your water medal.
Spotlight Hour events only last one hour, from 6 pm to 6 pm (local time), but don’t worry if you can’t participate in this week’s event. Next week will see Seel appear.
