List of Wisden Cricketers of the Year 2023
1. Harmanpreet Kaur
Harmanpreet Kaur made history as the inaugural Indian Women’s cricketer to receive the prestigious title of Wisden Cricketer of the Year. Her remarkable achievement was primarily attributed to her outstanding performance during an ODI match against England in Canterbury. Harmanpreet displayed her incredible talent by scoring an impressive 143 runs off just 111 balls, leading India to a memorable ODI series victory in England, a feat not accomplished since 1999. Under her captaincy, the Indian team clinched a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, further cementing her status as a remarkable cricketing talent.
2. Ben Foakes
Foakes played a pivotal role in England’s extraordinary home Test summer, which witnessed an unprecedented level of success. The team triumphed in six out of their seven Test matches and experienced a remarkable turnaround under the leadership of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. Fokaes was crucial in two of the, as in the first match against New Zealand at Lord’s, England found themselves in a precarious position with 118 runs still needed to secure a win when Foakes stepped in to bat at the fifth wicket. Displaying great composure and skill, he guided England alongside Joe Root to a memorable victory. Foakes’ partnership with Root was instrumental in steering the team to success. Three months later, during a match against South Africa at Old Trafford, Foakes once again showcased his talent and determination. He formed a remarkable partnership of 173 runs with Ben Stokes, which not only helped England level the series but also marked Foakes’ second Test century.
3. Daryl Mitchell
Mitchell’s outstanding performance saw him accumulate an impressive total of 538 runs with an average of 107. He etched his name in history as the 15th New Zealand men’s player to achieve a Test century at Lord’s, forging a record-breaking 236-run partnership with Blundell. Mitchell’s exceptional form continued as he went on to score a brilliant 190 in Nottingham, securing his third century of the series. This remarkable feat made him the fifth New Zealand player to achieve centuries in three consecutive Tests. In terms of records, Mitchell’s outstanding performance places him in esteemed company. Only Graham Gooch has amassed more runs in a three-match Test series in England. Additionally, joining the ranks of legends such as Don Bradman, Mitchell and Gooch became the only visiting batters to score centuries in each of their first three Tests in a series played in England.
4. Tom Blundell
Blundell showcased exceptional batting prowess during New Zealand’s Test matches in England last summer, accumulating a remarkable total of 383 runs. His standout performance came at Trent Bridge, where he notched up a century that displayed his skill and resilience. Additionally, Blundell’s contributions extended beyond that match, as he scored an impressive 96 in the second innings of the preceding Test at Lord’s and an unbeaten 88 in the final match held in Leeds.
5. Matthew Potts
Potts earned his Test debut following a remarkable performance in the County Championship representing Durham. He delivered an outstanding display, achieving his personal best first-class figures of 7-40 against Glamorgan. Impressed by his skills, the selectors chose him for England’s inaugural Test against New Zealand. Just two weeks later, on his Test debut, Potts continued to shine by claiming another seven wickets, including the prized scalp of Kane Williamson with only his fifth delivery in international cricket. By the end of the summer season, Potts had showcased his exceptional talent, amassing a total of 20 wickets in five Test matches. His accomplishments further solidified his status as the first England-qualified bowler to secure six or more six-wicket hauls in a single County Championship season. Potts’ remarkable rise in international cricket demonstrated his potential and marked him as a promising talent for England’s bowling attack.

Leading Cricketer in the World – Joe Root
Stokes received the prestigious title of Leading Cricketer in the World (Men) following his remarkable leadership in England’s Test matches. Ahead of a transformative summer, Stokes was entrusted with the captaincy, and under his guidance, England’s approach underwent a profound change, evolving into an unstoppable force driven by fearlessness. The team’s success was evident as they achieved emphatic victories over formidable opponents like New Zealand, India, and South Africa. Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in leading England to a historic series victory in Pakistan, solidifying his reputation as an influential leader. Stokes’ exceptional year also included being a part of the victorious T20 World Cup-winning squad. His contributions to the team’s success extended beyond the Test format, showcasing his versatility and impact across different cricketing formats.
Leading Woman Cricketer in the World -Beth Mooney
Despite enduring a broken jaw just days before a highly anticipated Ashes Test match in Canberra, Mooney displayed immense determination and resilience as she made a triumphant comeback. Defying the odds, she emerged as the top scorer for Australia in the team’s second innings, contributing a remarkable 63 runs. Her performance proved pivotal in the memorable Test match. Throughout 2022, she maintained an average of over 100, an outstanding feat in itself. Notably, she played a significant role in Australia’s victory in the World Cup, where she contributed a crucial half-century in the final. This triumph marked Australia’s seventh World Cup win, underscoring Mooney’s impact in high-pressure situations. Also, Mooney’s success extended to the Commonwealth Games, where she was an integral part of the gold medal-winning squad
Leading T20 Cricketer in the World -Suryakumar Yadav
Yadav etched his name in the record books by becoming just the second player ever to achieve the remarkable feat of scoring 1,000 T20I runs within a single calendar year in 2022. Yadav’s outstanding performances included two centuries, one against England in Nottingham and another against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui. While his run-scoring ability was remarkable, what truly set Yadav apart was his staggering strike rate. Throughout the year, he maintained an astonishing strike rate of 187.43 across 31 innings. This astounding rate showcases his ability to dominate bowling attacks and consistently score runs at a rapid pace.

Wisden Cricketers of the Year Each year, Wisden recognises the cricketers to be inducted into the ‘Wisden Cricketers of the Year list’. The induction is purely based on the influence of the cricketers on the previous English season. The award began with the naming of ‘Six Great Bowlers of the Year’ in 1889 and continued with the naming of ‘Nine Great Batsmen of the Year’, and ‘Five Great Wicket-Keepers’ in 1891. Since its inception, the annual award has recognized key players of the year with a few notable exceptions. |
