The Hylian Shield is one of the best shields in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and you can get it as soon as you unlock your first Skyview Tower, if you’re brave enough.

The shield is hidden in Hyrule Castle and guarded by Zelda’s terrifying new enemy. However, with a little courage and quick thinking, you can dodge around the enemy to grab the shield without taking damage.

Below you’ll find the location of the Hylian Shield from Tears of the Kingdom, along with how to get the shield early.

Location of the Hylian Shield in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

The location of the Hylian Shield of Tears of the Realm can be found in a treasure chest hidden in the docks of Hyrule Castle; the precise coordinates are (-0161, 1159, 0037).

The docks are in the same location as in Breath of the Wild, but accessing them works a little differently thanks to the changed landscape. You can navigate if you have the right devices or go down from the castle sanctuary if you want a less complicated method.

How to get the Hylian Shield in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

There are two main routes you can take to reach the Hylian Shield in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and the first depends on you having a direction stick.

If you have a Zonai Steering Stick Device, which you can obtain from the North Hyrule Archipelago Capsule Machine, among other places, travel to the western shore of the castle moat. You’ll find a ready-made boat where the road meets the water. Attach a control stick and a fan and let the wind propel you, or create your own wind with a Korok Frond and sail to the point below on the map.

There is a small opening hidden in the rock wall. Follow it a bit and it will open up to a large harbor with some docks and a jetty.

If you don’t already have a joystick, you can still access the springs. It just takes a little extra effort and unlocking the Serutabomac Shrine.

Cook up a couple of elixirs or stamina dishes and launch yourself into the sky from the Lookout Landing Skyview tower. Turn north towards Hyrule Castle and glide until you reach safe ground. You can get to the path outside of the shrine with just a stamina wheel and a couple of elixirs.

Make your way northeast around the castle, avoiding monsters whenever you can. Puddles of darkness aren’t a big concern here since you’re outdoors, so you can run through them as long as you don’t stay for too long.

The Serutabomac Sanctuary can be found on the map below.

Jump off the edge, deploy your paraglider, and float around the northern edge of the castle until you reach this location.

You can now walk to the docks, but you’ll need some health replenishers and an elixir of speed.

As you get closer to the ladder leading away from the docks, you might notice a shadowy puddle change position. You’ll definitely notice it a few seconds later as it quickly moves towards your position and sprouts a bunch of arms and hands; you are now facing a Gloom Hand. These hands will grab and squeeze you, reducing your health by one heart for each squeeze and inflicting sadness.

If you get the Hylian Shield early, the best thing to do is run away from Gloom Hands. I threw six flower bombs at them and several arrows from a Royal Guard bow, and that barely reduced their health. We have a guide on how to beat the Gloom Hands if you want to take them on head on. But be careful because, after his defeat, a Phantom Ganon will appear.

The ladder is the quickest way, if you can get around the hands, but if not, escape to the right, through the narrow passage between the rock and the ladder. You can briefly come into the light to mend broken hearts if necessary. Otherwise, quickly climb the wall and reach the landing.

Throw a Chu Chu Fire Jelly or Fire Fruit at the large brazier. The Gloom Hands will disappear and the chest containing the Hylian Shield will appear.

Is the Hylian Shield worth it in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

The Hylian Shield has a defense value of 90, making it one of the strongest in Hyrule. Be sure to save it for important encounters or particularly difficult fights and it’s not indestructible.

However, if the Hylian Shield is broken, you will now be able to retrieve it from Cece in Hateno Village. You will first need to have completed The Mayor’s Election to unlock Cece’s shop, and each time you pick it up, it will cost you 3,000 rupees.
