How to get muttering obols in Diablo 4

All the ways we know you can get Murmuring Obols in Diablo 4 are:

  • World events
  • Dungeon Events
  • Winery events
  • Mission rewards
  • Whisper caches

World events

The best way to get Murmuring Obols in Diablo 4 is to complete events. The most common events are world events, marked with an orange circle on the map, but they are not guaranteed to occur.

However, unless you’re having server issues, there’s probably a world event happening somewhere on the map, so keep an eye out for that orange circle if you want a quick way to get more Whispering Obols. Just keep in mind that world bosses like Ashava do not count as world events.

It’s also worth noting that if you complete the bonus objective, you’ll get even more Obols. The exact amounts vary depending on which World Tier you’re playing at, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the right side of the screen while you’re at a World Event to see what the bonus objective is.

Dungeons and Cellars Events

Dungeon and basement events mostly work exactly the same as world events, but there are some additional dungeon activities like cursed chests, cursed shrines, and the terrifying butcher that don’t seem to reward whispering obols in our experience. So stick to completing the objectives in the orange circles if you’re just looking for Obols.

These symbols tell you where to find dungeons.

Mission rewards

We also get some Whispering Trees from completing side quests like the Secret of Spring, but these can be random rewards.

Whisper caches

Opening quest chests and talking to NPCs to complete side quests will sometimes give you Murmuring Obols, but you’ll also need to occasionally claim them by opening Murmuring Caches from your inventory.

We have only received Murmuring Caches as side quest rewards, but it is possible to obtain them from other sources as well.

Murmuring caches can be opened from this inventory screen.

How to Improve the Murmuring Obols Ability in Diablo 4

It’s a good idea to continually spend your Obols as you get them because they are fairly easy to farm with Events and have a maximum limit, so you can’t just save them all and spend them at once.

However, you can save them longer if you increase your maximum Obol limit. To improve your Murmuring Obols ability in Diablo 4, you must claim renown rewards and find certain statues from the Altar of Lilith.

However, the Renown Obol ability upgrade isn’t available until you unlock World Tier 3, so if you’re just starting out, we recommend finding Altars of Lilith instead of farming Renown to increase your Murmuring Obol ability.
