How to Fast Travel in Starfield

Fast Travel is an important mechanic in Starfield to be able to quickly reach different destinations.

Sure, you might want to take the scenic route and maybe just walk or run to your next objective when you’re in the middle of a Starfield side mission. However, you’ll probably want to save time by simply Fast Traveling and finishing it faster.

There are many ways to fast travel in Starfield and the mechanics are very flexible, with some restrictions. Below, you’ll learn how to fast travel in Starfield and when you can’t do it.

How to Fast Travel in Starfield

If you want to fast travel in Starfield, simply open the menu and go to your star map at the top right. This will open your current map, depending on where you are. If you are on a planet, you will open the surface map and if you are in space, it will open the star map. You can switch between maps by pressing RB on the Xbox controller for the surface map or by continuously pressing the B button to zoom out further to the star map.

Simply click on a location you’ve already discovered on the surface map and a confirmation will appear asking if you want to fast travel to it. It is easy! There is also the option to fast travel directly to your ship by pressing the Y button.

Additionally, you can also travel directly from the surface of a planet to be in front of another planet before landing on it. When opening the surface map, zoom out to the star map, select a different planet, and then hold X to set a course toward it. The next screen will be you, inside your ship, facing the designated planet.

There’s also a clever way to quickly get to your next destination on a side quest you’re doing. On the menu screen, go to the bottom and select the Missions tab. Select a side mission and press Y or X. Pressing Y will only show you where your next destination is on the star map. Pressing X is a faster method as it will immediately tell you the exact location of your next target and tell you to land there.

When you can’t fast travel in Starfield

This section explaining when you can’t fast travel in Starfield is actually more complicated than how to do it itself. There are three main situations where we found you can’t fast travel: being overloaded with too many heavy objects, being in combat, and not having enough fuel to warp your ship.

Every object you carry, whether it’s a gun or a simple coffee cup, has a mass assigned to it. Weapons and equipment have heavy mass, while everyday items such as coffee mugs have very little. It has a mass limit which can be seen on the Inventory screen at the bottom right of your menu. Once you exceed that mass limit, you become overloaded. Running not only further depletes your oxygen and stamina, but it also prevents you from traveling fast.

Simply download a few items you need to ensure you don’t exceed your mass limit and you’ll be able to fast travel again. You can invest skill points in the weightlifting skill, which increases your mass limit and allows you to carry more objects at once.

Being in the middle of combat or with nearby enemies will also prevent you from fast traveling. You can get out of a fight!

In terms of fast travel between galaxies, you will need enough fuel and also to have discovered planets along a specific route to be able to cross those long distances. For example, in the image below, my boat does not have enough fuel capacity. Make the warp jump between my current location, the FOLII galaxy and the Kryx galaxy.

This isn’t a big deal, as you’ll just need to make a few extra jumps between closer planets to inch closer to the Kryx galaxy. You’ll just have to suffer through a few more loading screens than usual as you bounce around the planets.

To solve this problem, you need to add more HE3 tanks to your ship or invest skill points in your Astrodynamics skill. Increasing the skill range will increase the grav jump range of your jumps by a certain number of percentage points, as well as reducing the amount of fuel needed to perform the jump.

That is all for now! Have fun traveling fast through space in the Starfield universe.
