How to dock in Starfield

How to dock in Starfield

Unlike planets where you can just pick a landing spot and leave, you must dock on Starfield if you want to explore a ship or space station on your travels through the stars.

Although it’s not a very complicated process, Starfield has turned it into one by not properly explaining exactly how it works, so to help you out we have a quick explanation on how to dock in Starfield below.

If you need more help with Starfield’s systems, we also have pages on how persuasion works, how to pick locks, and how to change your appearance.

How to dock at Starfield

To dock in Starfield, you must get close enough to a stationary ship or space station for the “Dock” message to appear, then press and hold the dock button. This is ‘X’ on Xbox controllers and ‘R’ by default if you’re playing on a PC.

This “Docking” message appears when you are close enough to the docking port of a ship or space station, as long as you are aiming it correctly and it is not moving. So if you’re trying to board a ship, you first have to get it to stop by targeting its engines and damaging it enough.

To aim at a ship or space station and have the docking prompt appear, press ‘A’ on Xbox controllers, or ‘E’ if you’re playing on a PC. Continue pressing this button if the message doesn’t appear to eventually cycle through the options to display it, but make sure you are close enough to where you want to dock, or the dock message won’t appear.

Once you are docked and the short cutscene plays, you can now exit your ship and finally explore your target destination.

Once a ship’s engines are sufficiently damaged and stopped, you can now follow the exact same process mentioned above to dock it, by aiming at the ship and getting close enough for the “Dock” message to appear, then holding down the ” X” on Xbox. controllers or ‘R’ if you play on PC.

One of the first times you may encounter this is during the main quest of The Old Neighborhood, where Sarah tells you that you must target the engines of Moara’s ship to stop it so you can dock it.

However, the instructions are a little confusing, as you don’t need to aim other than looking at Moara’s ship. All you have to do is shoot at the ship like you would in any other space battle to reduce its health and shields completely, then it stops and you can approach it to dock.
