How to beat Stone Talus in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Stone Talus in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are mini-bosses that you will encounter while exploring Hyrule. They may look like big, sensitive rocks, but they pack a punch and can easily kill Link in one hit if you’re not careful. Additionally, some of them remain dormant until you cross them or try to climb them, which can make them difficult to spot until it’s too late.

As with other mini-bosses in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the Stone Talus can be easy to defeat once you know the basic tricks to defeating it. However, there are several variations of the Talus and sometimes you need a slightly different strategy depending on the type of Talus or the environment you are fighting in.

We’re here to show you how to beat Stone Talus in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, as well as how to beat the other Talus variants and we’ve also included some Stone Talus locations to help you hunt them down.

How to beat Stone Talus in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

To defeat a Stone Talus in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you must locate its weak point, which is a group of rocks protruding from part of its body. Once you identify the weak point, you’ll need to find a way to attack it with a melee weapon.

Not all Talus variants have their weakness in the same place. The Stone Talus by Horse God Bridge has its weak point at the top, while the one at Tangar Canyon has it at the back. Before you start charging towards the enemy, it’s a good idea to know exactly where to attack.

Having a melee weapon with attack damage above 14 will make fights with Talus much easier. Arrows also work to defeat a Stone Talus, but can make defeating one a very long process. We also recommend stocking up and taking Hasty Elixirs while fighting any Talus, as your increased speed can make it easier to dodge attacks.

A Stone Talus can throw its arms at you from a distance. They will throw out one arm at a time and split into two large rocks, both pointing directly at you. You can dodge them if you think you won’t make it in time, but you can use the rewind on one of the rocks to send it back to the Talus. Hitting them will briefly stun the Talus, which may give you a chance to attack it or reposition yourself.

Sometimes the rock you use rewind on will also remove the second rock.

Return to Sender.

After Stone Talus loses both arms to this attack (or if you destroy them with a Zonai Time Bomb), he will briefly crouch on the ground to literally rearm himself. He is briefly vulnerable while doing this and you can use this opportunity to attack the weak point.

Be sure to pay attention to what the Talus is still doing, though, as he can quickly spin towards you or throw you away once he regains his arms.

Well… this is not good.

Don’t get too close to a Stone Talus if you can help it, as it can simply hit Link with its side and remove almost all of your hearts in the process. He can also extend a fist and slam it into the ground to crush you if you are close enough.

However, if you end up dangerously close to one, then you can try to run under its legs and use Ascend to get to the top and to safety.

Ah, the many uses of Ascend!

If you are in an area where you can get to high ground while fighting a Stone Talus, then by all means do so. Fighting a Talus from a higher area means you can generally time your Rewind better and can glide over the creature if that’s where you need to be.

We did a Kenobi and got high ground.

However you get to the weak spot, your goal is the same once you’re there. Repeatedly hit the cluster of rocks with your melee weapon to wear down the Stone Talus’ health. However, once the Talus starts rumbling, you must get off it and return to a safe distance or it will throw Link into the nearest wall or floor.

Now all you need to do is rinse and repeat until the Stone Talus is destroyed.

How to beat Battle Talus in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

A Battle Talus in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom as a variant of the Stone Talus that has an additional set of problems: Bokoblins.

Bokoblins have been installed on some Stone Talus which then turn it into a Battle Talus. Fortunately, fighting this variant is very similar to fighting a Stone variant.

To beat a Battle Talus, we highly recommend taking out all the Bokoblins that are mounted on the Talus. Usually the easiest way to do this is to attach a Shock Fruit or Fire Fruit to an arrow and take out each Bokoblin from a distance. This keeps you safe from the Talus and allows you to avoid getting shot by Bokoblin arrows.

If you go up there while the Bokoblins are there, they can easily take you down.

Once you’ve got rid of the Bokoblins, you can now fight Talus himself. Again, you can use Rewind when Battle Talus throws his arms at you to stun him. Unlike the Stone Talus, however, a Battle Talus will not completely fall to the ground when rearming.

When a Battle Talus has been stunned, knocked down, or is rearming, you must run alongside it and use Ascend to ascend via one of the wooden platforms on its head. When you cross the platform, you must look for its weak point.

Once you find the weak spot, hit it repeatedly with your melee weapon to wear down the Talus’s health. When the Battle Talus begins to rumble, get off it quickly or it will knock Link to the ground.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Stone Talus Rewards Explained

You can get a handful of rewards for fighting and beating a Stone Talus or any Talus variant in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

As you attack the weak point of any Talus, it will drop valuable gems that can be anything from amber to ruby. You will also get a bunch of these gems once you defeat the Talus, however these are not the important thing.

When you defeat any Talus, you will be able to collect a Talus Heart. Now, to put it simply, this is a huge weapon upgrade for you to fuse with your melee weapons, but choose how to use it wisely because you can only fuse it once.

Can we call this weapon Heartbreaker?

The Talus Heart will add a massive stat boost to whatever weapon you add it to and can make the weapon act like an overpowered hammer, so we recommend adding it to something that is already high level to make it truly noticeable.

That is all for now! If you need more help on your Hyrule adventure, check out our Shrine locations guide or our Skyview Tower locations guide to get your bearings.
