How to beat Mendez in Resident Evil 4

Here’s our Resident Evil 4 Mendez boss strategy:

Preparing for the Mendez fight

For the Mendez fight we recommend bringing the TMP weapon. You can buy it from the merchant for 10,000 pesetas in standard difficulty. You don’t need it to beat Mendez, but it will make your battle much easier. That being said, we managed to defeat Mendez on our second attempt using the Red9 pistol.

We also suggest that you bring at least one spare knife, as you will have to stop a lot during the fight, so your main knife could break.

If you have extra fish, eggs, or vipers in your inventory, you should also make sure you have amulets equipped that increase your healing from these sources. However, the amulets are random rewards from the shooting range, so you may not have any healing ones before the fight with Mendez.

If you do not have these items or amulets, we recommend purchasing a first aid spray from the merchant if you can afford it. The merchant refreshes his stock of first aid spray fairly regularly throughout the game, so if you have the space (and don’t mind spending the money), it’s always nice to have extra healing before a boss fight.

Strategy to fight against Méndez – Phase 1

You must first break all the boxes and barrels on the lower and upper floors to get all the resources they can contain. They contain ammo, health items, and crafting resources, but keep in mind that their content is randomized for each encounter.

For the fight itself, you need to go to the top floor and shoot the eye on Mendez’s back. This is where the TMP comes in handy, as its high rate of fire is excellent for attacking the eye.

When Mendez takes enough damage, he will be knocked down and then you will need to run up to him and use the knife where the message appears above him.

Between shooting Mendez’s eye and stabbing him when he’s down, you need to stop and crouch when the symbols appear. These can happen very quickly, so the sooner you take down Mendez the better, which is why TMP is so good during this early phase of the fight.

Lastly, you’ll want to balance your health items and knife durability if Mendez catches you. You will lose health if you choose to press the button to escape, but you will lose knife durability if you use it to escape.

Strategy to fight against Méndez – Phase 2

Mendez moves to the back wall after you’ve damaged him enough, and your new strategy during this fight should be to shoot the red barrels in his hands when they appear and use your ranged weapons to damage his body when he doesn’t. is. red barrels.

It seemed better to do it from the top floor.

Just like in the first phase, when Mendez takes enough damage, he will fall to the ground. He jumps down when this happens and presses the knife gauge to damage it.

Mendez can still grab you when he lunges forward, but he will also throw flaming chunks of wood at you. You can avoid these fire attacks by running left or right just before he launches the first one. On Standard difficulty, it will drop two flaming debris.

Keep repeating the pattern of destroying red barrels and shooting Mendez at every opportunity to take him down and once he’s taken enough damage the fight will end.

You’ll get Mendez’s False Eye for defeating him, which can be sold to the Merchant, and if this is your first time facing Mendez, you’ll also get the “Big Grilled Cheese” Trophy or Achievement. Luis would be proud.

Our Resident Evil 4 walkthrough can help you through the village with guides on the Big and Little Cave Shrine puzzle solutions, the Church dial puzzle, and the Del Lago, El Gigante, and Mendez bosses. When you reach the castle, you’ll need to tackle the correct timing puzzles of the Treasure Sword, the Four Slotted Wall, the Dining Room Bell, and the Grandfather Clock, along with the Garrador Dungeon, Two Giants, and Ramon Salazar’s bosses. The island is next, and there are still puzzles with calibration puzzles, keycard locations, and a hidden wrench, along with final bosses Krauser and Sadler.

Fighting Mendez in Hardcore or Professional mode

Most of what we recommended above for fighting Mendez on Standard difficulty applies to fighting him on Extreme and Professional, except for a few modifications:

  • Make sure to create a manual save right before the fight if you are playing on Professional, as there is no auto-save.
  • If you can’t get a good angle on his back during the first phase of the fight, shoot Mendez anywhere.
  • You may want to switch to a shotgun when Mendez is around to get in some powerful shots before switching back to using a pistol or the TMP.
  • Mendez is more aggressive and gets up faster when he’s down, so try to fight him from the bottom floor so the knife reaches him in time, or just keep shooting at him instead of jumping towards the knife, as you’ll probably miss. immediate.
  • Grenades are a big help when Mendez is down, but you might want to save them for the next fight.
  • Bring several spare knives if you can! Since Méndez is more aggressive, you will stop a lot more.

Rifles can also help deal a lot of damage when Mendez is downed or when he is far away in the second phase of the fight. However, in our experience, good aim or an improved rate of fire is necessary to use the rifle. and Have enough time to dodge and stop when the prompts appear.

Good luck facing Mendez!
