Horizon Frozen Wilds – A Secret Shared: How to upgrade your spear, find the Mounting Rail in the Horizon DLC

A Shared Secret is one of the first side quests you’ll learn in Horizon’s Frozen Wilds DLC, but it’s also one of the most important.

Completing it will unlock spear upgrades, allowing you to finally modify the one piece of your equipment that felt a little left out compared to the rest.

So, this page will walk you through the quest and explain exactly how to upgrade your spear in Horizon Zero Dawn’s Frozen Wilds DLC, but for more information on the game, head back to our main Horizon guides and walkthroughs hub. Zero Dawn, or to our dedicated center. In its place, the Horizon Frozen Wilds DLC guide.

Horizon Frozen Wilds: A Secret Shared – How to Find the Rail Part

Shortly after starting the DLC successfully, as you head to the town of Song’s Edge (if you’re having trouble getting there, we have more information on that in our main Horizon Frozen Wilds guide on how to start the DLC), you’ll notice a bit of green . exclamation mark on your nearby map.

The one closest to Song’s Edge is the starting point for A Secret Shared, the quest that, when completed, unlocks your ability to upgrade your spear. Since it is available from the start of the DLC, we recommend doing it as soon as possible to take full advantage of its rewards.

To begin, first follow the marker to a shaman named Kamut, on the outskirts of town.

It turns out that he wants to give you a little advice and points you in the direction of a “metal bird’s nest”, right at the northernmost point of this already very northern area. Picking up a piece of rail from one of the intact birds inside will allow you to upgrade your spear.

Follow the waypoint for about 2000 meters and you will come to a bunker. Walking down the side, you’ll realize it’s not a metal bird’s nest… it’s a drone hangar; in fact, on the map it is literally called Drone Hangar.

How to find the rail piece:

There’s a small platforming puzzle to get you started from the beginning, so here’s a step-by-step process to progress through the hangar:

  • First, quickly grab a piece of Blue Gleam from the body of the fallen creature to the left of the drone.
  • Next, head to the back right of the hangar, where there is a half ladder sticking out of a small platform. Jump to that and you’ll see animal figure number 5 at the top, one of the many Frozen Wilds collectibles available in the DLC.
  • Jump back up and face the drone; You will see the yellow handholds above indicating their availability for climbing. Climb the longer ladder to the right of the drone while facing it, towards the platform. Then cross the drone to the platform on the other side via the yellow handholds.
  • On that platform there is a console that you can activate to move the drone.
  • Once the drone has moved, jump to the back left corner, where you can climb onto the platform that will take you to the next room.
  • In the passage you will find a simple riddle: the solution is: Right, Down, Right.

Follow the linear passage, descending to scan data points and opening chests as you search for minor loot, and continue until you reach the next room.

There you will find a drone that has not been touched previously. Scan the nearby data point, then walk up to the drone and pick up the rail part on its front end (if you’re having a hard time finding what to interact with, don’t forget you can use your Focus scanner by pressing R3).

Jump over the nearby wall for a shortcut to the exit, but before you leave it’s time for a quick fight with a Stalker, a tricky enemy with ranged and melee abilities, as well as the ability to use invisibility camouflage.

Its body is weak to Shock damage, while all of its destructible parts are vulnerable to Rend damage. It’s up to you whether you want to tamper with it or smash it, but we recommend shooting off all the bits like it’s a cheap children’s toy, lest its stealth functionality make your life a little easier.

Return to Kamut: You can fast travel to a nearby bonfire, if you have unlocked unlimited fast travel in Horizon; Otherwise, it will be a bit difficult to return.

How to upgrade your spear in the Horizon Zero Dawn Frozen Wilds DLC

Talk to Kamut once you have the rail part and the ability to upgrade your spear like any other weapon will become available.

The functionality is basically the same: there are two mod slots on your spear, which you can fill by heading to the Crafting tab in your menu.

You’ll get spear mods from Treasures Boxes, which can be found around the world and purchased from vendors to get standard shards. We’ve yet to find a particularly good way to farm spear mods so far, so for now, treasure boxes seem to be your best option!
