Finding the lightning bolts is the goal of one of Fortnite’s many weekly challenges.
Completing it will give you additional XP to help you earn many Season 5 rewards. Please note that you will need to have a Battle Pass in order to take on this challenge.

How floating lightning works in Fortnite
For the week 1 challenges, you have the following task:
- Look for floating lightning bolts (7 total, 10 battle stars)
Another challenge this week is the location of the Fortnite Risky Reels treasure map.
What this means is that floating lightning bolts can be found all over the map.
Like last season’s Fortnite letters, these are lightning bolts high in the sky, similar to collectibles you can find in other games.
Once you find a Lightning Bolt, interact with it to pick it up and you’ll add one more to your total. Once you have found seven, the challenge is complete.
However, unlike Fortnite Letters, these are much less inaccessible. Although they are easy to spot from a distance, they are high in the air, farther than any jump. And no, you can’t grab them while sliding off the Battle Bus – we tried!
The only solution is to take advantage of them. Our building guide explains the basics of how to do this, but you’ll want to build ramps that raise you to the same height. Once you are, you can pick it up.
However, the fact that it is simply out of reach poses additional difficulties. For one, it takes a lot of materials to reach them due to their distance from the ground. Our recommendation is to cut down some trees to obtain quick and easy wood materials. Otherwise, loot boxes can help.
