Final Fantasy 7’s Chapter 9 options make a fairly linear game expand in some interesting ways, if only for a short time.
By choosing between the Johnny, Heads or Tails, and Madam M massage courses in Wall Market, you can open up some optional side quests with two separate paths you can take.
This page explains which options result in which path, and those paths involve so much in terms of challenge, variety, and also for completionists looking to do everything in the game, such as getting all nine dresses.

How Final Fantasy 7 Remake Chapter 9 options work
When choosing between the Johnny, Heads or Tails, and Madam M massage courses, you can see two different sets of side quests: the Chocobo Sam quest line and the Madam M quest line.
While either option and the resulting side quests result in the same overall story outcome, one is tied to a specific Trophy and is a longer, rambling low combat route, while the other is shorter but gives you Face tougher enemies. (We discuss these quests specifically after the option explanations at the bottom of this page.)
Also, depending on which path you take, Cloud will wear a different dress to Don Corneo’s audition.
Ultimately, though (spoilers ahead), this is a purely aesthetic choice; Unlike the original, Corneo will select Cloud as the next Mrs. Corneo no matter what.
It’s worth noting that no election is “permanent.” Once the game is over, you have the option to replay the chapters, allowing you to revisit these options and the other side quest route in Wall Market, and wear those other dresses.
This is particularly useful for the completionists, where there is a Trophy for finding all of these dresses along with Tifa and Aerith’s full selection of outfits.
Final Fantasy 7 Johnny’s Choice: Yes, No or Ignore?
The first significant event of Chapter 9 comes just as you reach Wall Market. You will meet Chocobo Sam who will ask you to describe the girl you are looking for, but it doesn’t matter what you tell him; Either way, next you will have to go to Corneo’s Mansion.
Along the way, Johnny will run past you. If you lose him in the crowd, he will still be on the map outside The Honeybee Inn. He will give you the typical flow of conscious love and longing for him, and then he will ask you:
- Saying yes places you in the Chocobo Sam questline
- Saying no, or ignoring Johnny, puts you in Madam M’s quest line.
If you follow Johnny, you must agree with him. If you don’t, you’ll get the same result as if you didn’t bother to follow it at all.
You need to follow Johnny and agree with him for the Chocobo Sam quest line, which will give you the blue and black dress for Cloud. The path to the Johnny Experience Trophy also continues. You can also get the black and gray dress for Cloud.
Ignoring Johnny sets up Madam M’s quests and a path that can grant the black and gray dress to Cloud or the purple and white dress to Cloud.
Final Fantasy 7 Heads and Tails Pick: What to do during the coin toss
Regardless of whether you talk to Johnny, you will next have to head to Don Corneo’s mansion, where Leslie will tell you to visit the Trio: Chocobo Sam, Andrea and Madam M. You have to see Madam M at the end, but the other ones can make two in any order.
Andrea’s receptionist will deny you entry, so you won’t be able to make any decisions here. However, with Chocobo Sam, she will offer you a coin toss.
The options will be heads, tails or not interested. Here are the various results:
- Calling Heads or Tails places you in the Chocobo Sam questline
- Telling Sam No Deal will put you in Madam M’s questline
Because Sam uses a trick coin, it is impossible to win, which is why both outcomes have the same result.
To clarify this further, if you call heads or tails, this continues the path of the Chocobo Sam quest, which eventually grants the blue and black dress for Cloud. Again, the black and white dress is also available in this route.
If you choose No Deal instead, you will be on Madam M’s quest path, who will give you the purple and white dress for Cloud, or the black and gray dress for Cloud.
Final Fantasy 7 Madam M Massage Choice: Poor Course, Standard Course or Deluxe Course?
Madam M is the last member of the trio you will see and she will offer you a hand massage.
Madam M has three types of massages available:
- Poor Man’s Course – Costs 100 gil and is part of the Chocobo Sam questline.
- Standard Course: Costs 1000 gil and is a neutral option that has no impact on the questline.
- Deluxe Course: Costs 3000 gil and is part of Madam M’s questline.
For Chocobo Sam’s quest path, you’ll need to choose the poor man’s hand massage, which will allow you to choose the blue and black dress for Cloud or the black and white dress for Cloud.
For Madam M’s quest path, you need to select the Deluxe Hand Massage, which will give you the Purple and White Dress for Cloud, or the Black and Gray Dress for Cloud.
After this, she will tell you to go to the Coliseum, to see more of the main story without any impact on Cloud’s outfit.
Once you’ve defeated Hell House, Aerith will be whisked away to Madam M’s house and you’ll be left with one of two possible sets of quests, depending on your actions at the beginning of the Chapter. You’ll know which path you’re on based on who gives you your quests after the Hell House battle.

How do the three options in Chapter 9 of Final Fantasy 7 Remake affect the Wall Market side quests you encounter?
The sections above describe which options will take you in which direction you will end up, but you will need to make the three correct options to get the desired result.
Here are all the choices you should make throughout Chapter 9 depending on what you want to see, as well as the names of the side quests and the dress they unlock:
- Following Johnny, agreeing with Johnny, calling the draw, and selecting the poor guy’s massage sets up Chocobo Sam’s missions.

- Finally, whichever path you follow, if you ignore your quests and return to Madame M early, you’ll get the black and gray dress for Cloud.
If you mix and match, it seems to be the path you’ve followed the most. For example, we agreed with Johnny, called the coin toss, and chose the deluxe massage, and still got Chocobo Sam’s quests.
These are pretty important if you want to unlock a specific dress. But if you don’t want to replay the game later and watch it all, what’s the best way to go from a gameplay perspective?
Madam M’s route is more combat intensive, but Chocobo Sam’s shows you a lot more of the Market. So it’s up to you whether you’d rather get a little more EXP and AP at this stage, or explore the city and chop up the toughest enemies in a quicker replay after finishing the game.
Chocobo Sam’s route gives you more face time with Johnny, while Madam M’s gives you more dialogue with Mireille, if that helps you decide.
You’ll have to follow the Chocobo Sam route to get The Johnny Experience trophy, and you’ll have to follow both routes (one in a later game with chapter selection) to earn the Best In The Business trophy.
Finally, remember that to obtain the three Cloud dresses, which are necessary for the Dressed To The Nines Trophy, you will also need to complete a Chapter 9 playthrough where you will ignore any of the quest sets.
