Best CB in FIFA 21: the best central defenders in FIFA
There are no prizes for guessing who is the best centre-back in FIFA this year, as Virgil Van Dijk once again takes the top prize. Sergio Ramos, Giorgio Chiellini, Mats HUmmels and Thiago Silva continue to defy their age here, although their usefulness in FIFA 21 will depend on how much emphasis is placed on pace this year – in last year’s game, slow defenders were on the verge of being unusable.
As with many other lists this year, we’ve expanded this one to a top 20, given the depth of quality available – not that the state of the defense in real-world play would justify it, if the start of the season 20/21 The season is anything to go by! Piquet and Lenglet should consider themselves lucky to be around this one after their late-season performances in the summer.

Other things you should know about how to choose the best FIFA defenders
As always, there’s more than just player ratings to consider when choosing your back three, four or five in FIFA 21, with slightly different factors becoming more or less important depending on the mode you’re playing and the style you choose.
- For Career Mode, potential is also important: some players have more built-in growth potential than others, and if you plan to play at least two seasons in Career Mode, that will have a big impact on your team. It’s also a great way to pick up a bargain, so if you’re interested in finding some youngsters, take the time to check out our detailed list of the best FIFA 21 young players and potential wonderkids, which includes some of the best youngsters . defenders in the game.
- For Ultimate Team, remember that you can use Chemistry Styles – Chemistry Styles, if you didn’t know, add up to a whopping 90 points to your player’s attributes, distributed according to the Style you choose. You can read more about chemistry in general in our guide on how FIFA chemistry works and also the best FIFA chemistry styles in our detailed guide.
- Think about your playing style when looking at stats: We touched on this briefly above, but certain defenders will perform better in certain situations. Jérôme Boateng is much more physical than Gerard Piqué, for example. Generally, with centre-backs you want to complement physicality with class (think Vidic and Ferdinand in their prime), while the attributes of full-backs will depend on whether you want them bombing forward and crossing, or sitting back and purely defending.
