India Equality Day 2023: India Equality Day is celebrated annually on April 14. The day marks the birth anniversary of ‘Architect of the Constitution of India’, Dr BR Ambedkar. And this year we celebrated his 132nd birthday. Nothing less than a festival, the day is celebrated by all groups and communities in all the states and union territories of the country.

Why is April 14 celebrated as Equality Day in India?

On April 14, Ambedkar Jayanti or Bhim Jayanti is held to honor the memory of Indian politician and social reformer BR Ambedkar. Under Rule 110 of the Assembly, Minister MK Stalin said in the year 2022 that the state of Tamil Nadu would celebrate April 14 as ‘Samathuva Naal’ or ‘Equality Day’, in honor of BR Ambedkar.

This choice was made to honor Babasaheb’s efforts to end discrimination based on caste and religion. To bring about changes in Indian society, Bharat Ratna Ambedkar suggested adopting the Uniform Civil Code. He emphasized equality in terms of religion, gender and caste.

In addition, he participated in the three round tables in London. His proposal to create a separate electorate for untouchables was rejected by Gandhiji, leading to the Poona Pact in 1932.

Dr. Ambedkar was a wonderful liberal fighter who recognized the lack of doctrine of the Dalit Movement and provided necessary support to it. He raised awareness about the need to live a grace-filled life among the oppressed classes.

  • Ambedkar advocated the creation of a separate electoral system for untouchables and other marginalized groups in his testimony before the Southborough Committee in 1919 as part of the preparations for the Government of India Act.
  • Shahaji II, the Maharaja of Kolhapur, helped Ambedkar set up the newspaper “Mooknayaka” (leader of the Silent Ones) in 1920.
  • He founded the “Bahishkrit Hitkarini Sabha” (Association for the Welfare of the Marginalized) in 1923.
  • In 1927, Ambedkar had started organized campaigns for Dalit rights, calling for public water supplies accessible to all and the right of all castes to join temples.
  • Ambedkar signed the Poona Pact in 1932.
  • In 1930, he spoke on behalf of the Untouchables at the Round Table. The Harijans got a reservation seat in the elections as a result of their tireless work and perseverance.
