Elden Ring horse location: How to unlock the horse Torrent in Elden Ring

How to unlock the horse in Elden Ring is one of the first big questions you’ll run into during your time exploring the world.

Elden Ring is the first FromSoftware to feature a completely open world – there’s even a map! – Therefore, making the most of your travel options is key to saving time or even escaping enemies when necessary. This is where your horse named Torrent comes into play. That said, they are not available from the start.

This page explains how to unlock the horse in Elden Ring and how Torrent works so you can prepare properly before hitting the road.

How to unlock the horse in Elden Ring

As we mentioned, the Elden Ring horse is not available from the start. Once you’re in the world, you need to look for Sites of Grace, which are Elden Ring’s equivalent to Dark Souls’ bonfires.

To unlock the horse in Elden Ring, you must rest at a Site of Grace near Gatefront Ruins. Gatefront Ruins is located northwest of where you start, at the base of a massive gate that leads to Castle Stormveil.

To the northwest and southeast of Gatefront Ruins are Sites of Grace, and either will do. Activate it and then rest there, and Melina will greet you in a cutscene. If this doesn’t happen, you may need to have rested in other places first. Thank you: For us, we visited Stranded Graveyard, The First Step, Church of Elleh, Groveside Cave and then Gatefront.

This is Grace Point south of Gatefront Ruins; Either one should be enough for Melina to pay you a visit.

Once this is done, the character Melina will pay you a visit. She is one of the key characters in the game, she gives you fragments of the world’s history and allows you to level up your stats.

During this first visit, she will grant you a ring called Spectral Steed Whistle. This allows the horse, called Torrent, to be summoned.

Before leaving the Gatefront Ruins area, know that you can also pick up a Map Fragment and the Whetstone Knife.

If you’re wondering how the horse works both in combat and in freedom, skip (or gallop?) to the next section.

How Torrent works in Elden Ring

Torrent is very likely to quickly become your traveling companion in Elden Ring. The horse allows for greater mobility than we’re used to in FromSoftware games, which is even more important with the vastness of this new open world.

Right from the start, in addition to increasing your overall speed, Torrent can double jump. This allows for greater verticality during your exploration – if you find treasure on the surface or are simply trying to escape an enemy group, this is your option. There are also certain points on the map where you can perform a super jump.

Speaking of enemies, you can also Torrent during combat. Mounted combat in Elden Ring is quite different from normal encounters: you can only use your right-hand weapon (at least during the network test!) and it also allows spells. That said, it’s definitely worth practicing on smaller enemies before attempting to defeat bosses on horseback.

Torrent may be ethereal, but not eternal. Your horse may take damage during combat, and if completely exhausted, it will die. Don’t worry though, as you can summon them again at any time with two methods (at least from what we gathered during our time with the network test):

  • Resting in a Place of Grace
  • Use one of your health flasks to recover them immediately.

That’s all you need to know about Torrent. Now go and let the legend come to life!
