He was the chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee and a leader of the Dalit and minority rights movement in India. He also served as the first Law Minister of independent India.
He was also the first untouchable to enter Elphinstone College, affiliated to the University of Bombay. Throughout his life, he worked for the betterment of the Dalit community. In 1936, he published the book Annihilation of Caste, which describes the caste system and orthodox Hindu religious leaders.
That same year, he also formed the Independent Labor Party. He converted to Buddhism in 1956. In 1990, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.
