Diablo 2 – Monastery locations: Where to find the Monastery Barracks and Monastery Catacombs in Act I explained

Stuck on Tools of the Trade or Sisters of Slaughter? Here are the locations of the Monastery Barracks and Monastery Catacombs in Diablo 2.

The Monastery Barracks and Monastery Catacombs are two key locations during your first few hours in Diablo 2.

While you’re still learning how to fight the hordes of Hell, the last two missions of the first act will ask you to find unknown locations during your travels.

Tools of the Trade will take you to the Monastery Barracks, while Sisters to the Slaughter takes place in the Monastery Catacombs. These can be hard to find, especially if it’s your first time playing.

This page explains the locations of the Monastery Barracks and Monastery Catacombs in Diablo 2 so you can complete Act I in no time.

How to start Tools of the Trade and Sisters to the Slaughter in Diablo 2

In Diablo 2, Act I primarily serves as an introduction to both the story and some of the key characters you’ll meet along the way. While not all quests are necessary to advance to Act II, you will likely complete all six organically. This includes Search for Cain, which tasks you with finding the Underground Passage, among others.

The fifth and sixth missions, called Tools of the Trade and Sisters to the Slaughter respectively, take place within the same location. But although it seems quite simple, getting to the Monastery can be complicated.

Tools of the Trade are awarded by the blacksmith Charsi after completing the quest The Forgotten Tower. Alternatively, you should be at least level eight and Deckard Cain should already be back at camp.

As for Sisters to the Slaughter, Deckard Cain will assign the quest after Tools of the Trade. Be sure to talk to him when you return to camp to activate it.

As we mentioned, both missions take place in the Monastery. However, to get to them we will have to go through a series of areas, most of which do not have their own reference point.

Unfortunately, the map layouts in Diablo 2 are randomly generated, so we can’t show you the exact location. But don’t worry: the following sections will explain the usual paths regardless of the variants in each independent area.

Diablo 2 Monastery Barracks Location Explained

Let’s start with the tools of the trade. The Monastery Barracks are easier to find than the Catacombs, but in comparison, the location does not have its own landmark.

Of course, it won’t take you long to find it as you explore Act I. You should at least get through the Cold Plains, Stony Field, and Dark Wood, so don’t worry about missing it before then.

However, once you stumble upon Black Marsh, look for a path to The Tamoe Highland.

From here, the general rule is to stick to the road. Feel free to take as many detours as you want, especially if you want to level up (there’s a dungeon called The Pit in this area that’s perfect for this).

But whenever possible, following the road you will reach the Monastery Gate.

The enemies will be stronger here, so take your time and use potions wisely. At one point you will find an exit to the outside and to an area called The Exterior Cloister.

There’s not much going on in this area, but it has its own point of reference. Be sure to activate it so it is added to the list and take a break to return to the Rogue Camp in case you need to resupply so you don’t waste a city scroll.

The Monastery Barracks can be found after the Outer Cloister. This is a large area that has no subsequent levels. It is important to keep this in mind since here you will find the way to jail.

It’s not necessary for this mission, so be sure to explore every corner until you find The Smith in The Barracks.

In our experience, the boss was in an unexplored corner of the map, so we recommend exploring it completely until you finally find it.

After the fight, interact with the forge to grab the Horadric Malus. This is the tool Charsi needed, so return it to the camp and the mission will be over. She will then give you the opportunity to imbue a piece of equipment.

Diablo 2 Monastery Barracks Location Explained

Once you’re done with Tools of the Trade, we recommend opening a city portal using a scroll to make it easier to return here. But in any case, you can always use the waypoint to The Outer Cloister and go through The Barracks again.

While at the camp, talk to Deckard Cain to start the quest Sisters to the Slaughter. Then, we will return to The Barracks and enter the jail.

The first thing you’ll do in Jail Level 1 is find its waypoint, in case you need to head into town and don’t have a town scroll to use.

From here, all you have to do is fight off the hordes of enemies until you finally emerge into the Inner Cloister.

This is a small area that primarily serves as a halfway point. As such, activate the waypoint before setting off in case you need to make a trip to the campsite, as the next waypoint is a bit far away.

Leaving the Interior Cloister will take you to the Cathedral. Prepare to repel some hellish forces here and prepare to descend. The Catacombs of the Monastery are located after the Cathedral.

This is a large dungeon, so take your time exploring it. The Catacombs have a total of four levels to go through and luckily there is a waypoint on the second level.

Be sure to activate the waypoint as the final boss of Act 1 awaits you on the next level; Replenishing and emptying your inventory is a must.

Upon reaching Catacombs level 4, the Sisters of Slaughter quest will be updated with the objective of killing Andariel; that’s all.

It’s a tough fight, so it’s crucial to have activated the waypoint at the top level as a plan B if things go wrong.

After achieving victory, be sure to grab all relevant loot and return to Camp Rogue to continue exploring or skip to Act 2. Welcome to Diablo!
