It won’t be long until you have to identify items in Diablo 2, as unidentified items will be a constant during your travels.
This action will quickly become as regular as drinking potions, but it comes at a cost. To reveal the statistics of unidentified equipment and therefore use it, you will need a specific item. Fortunately, there are some interesting tools and alternatives to make the process less complicated.

How to Identify Items with Identification Scrolls in Diablo 2
While you will often see items that do not need to be identified, the truth is that most of the equipment that will enhance your character’s abilities will not be identified at first.
You can tell the difference between the two categories right away, as the unidentified team is marked in red and displays a message saying so in its description, without showing any of its stats. Additionally, you will not be able to equip said piece of equipment until it has been identified.
The Identification Scroll is your bread and butter for unidentified equipment.
The Identification Scroll is an item that you will see frequently, either as loot from enemies or as an item that you can purchase from vendors. To use it, all you have to do is open the inventory, use the interact button (right-click on the PC or whatever gamepad button you press to equip equipment), and then select the unidentified item. Click/press and it will be identified.
Now, it’s worth noting that each scroll takes up one slot in your inventory. This may not seem like much, but after a few hours you will start to run out of space without realizing it. For the mere cost of some gold and two inventory slots, the Tome of Identification can contain up to 20 Scrolls of Identification.
The process remains the same when using tomes instead of scrolls.
You’ll have to manually drag existing scrolls into the tome if you have them in your inventory, but subsequent ones (whether looted or purchased) will be added automatically, as long as you haven’t reached the 20 limit.
However, if you’d rather spend gold on something else, there is a way to convert the action to identify items completely free of charge.

How to identify free items in Diablo 2
Of course, you’ll spend tons of gold in Diablo 2 and Identification Scrolls can add up over time. Considering that not every item you identify will be better than what you have, or even fit the class you choose, you’ll be burning scrolls left and right.
Fortunately, there is a way to obtain the ability to identify items for free during Act I. To do this, you must accept and complete the quest Search for Cain, which tasks you with traversing the Underground Passage, searching for a scroll to solve. a puzzle and finally rescue Deckard Cain on Tristram.

Once Cain returns to Camp Rogue, he will offer to identify items at any time for free. All you have to do is talk to him to see the option. This will identify all items in his current inventory and of course the action can be repeated indefinitely.
This changes your priorities quite a bit. If you need to identify items on the fly, you’ll have plenty of looter enemy scrolls to do so. But if your inventory is full of unidentified items, grabbing a waypoint or using a City Scroll for a quick visit to Cain is the way to go.
If you don’t rescue the character during Cain’s Quest in Act I, he will still appear in Act II, but you will be charged for identifying the items.
