Destiny 2 Synthstrand sources, drop rate, and how to get Synthcord and Synthweave explained

How to make sense of (and get) Synthstrand, Synthcord, and Synthweave in Destiny 2.

Destiny 2’s Synthstrand, Synthcord, and Synthweave are resources you need as part of Armor Synthesis, also known as transmog.

These all debut alongside Season of the Splicer and require you to farm a total of three new coins by defeating enemies and completing bounties.

Developer Bungie didn’t provide many details about the nitty-gritty of Armor Synthesis before launch, but don’t worry. The season is already underway and with it come the answers we were looking for.

This page will cover everything you need to know about Synthstrand sources, as well as the best way to obtain Synthcord and Synthweave during your expeditions.

In this page:

Update: On Thursday, June 22, Bungie announced that Synthstrand will be removed from Destiny 2 at the start of Season 15, which begins on Tuesday, August 24. Instead, you’ll be able to purchase Ada-10 rewards for 10,000 Glimmer each.

What are Synthstrand, Synthcord, and Synthweave used for in Destiny 2?

With the Season of the Splicer comes three new currencies: Synthstrand, Synthcord and Synthweave. You’ll need to collect them all in a specific order to access Destiny 2’s transmog system, called Armor Synthesis in the game.

Before we get into the details, below is the step-by-step process provided by Bungie before the season began:

  1. First, you will have to defeat enemies to earn Synthstrand.
  2. Once you have collected at least 150 Synthstrand, you will be able to accept rewards to earn Synthcord.
  3. Synthcord can be used in Loom in the Tower to obtain Synthweave.
  4. Lastly, Synthweave is used to convert a lesser or legendary armor skin unlocked from collections into a universal armor ornament.

Before you can unlock the above, you must first complete a quest to unlock Armor Synthesis. Fortunately, it’s fairly short and can be started by simply talking to Banshee-44 in the Tower (located on the path to the Bazaar from the Courtyard). He will give you the introductory quest to Armor Synthesis, which tasks you with visiting Ada-1 (it’s northwest of the annex).

The mission involves you traveling to Europe to retrieve two items from a specific location. Once you’ve reported in, complete the last few steps and Synthstrand will start dropping from enemies.

How to get Synthstrand in Destiny 2: Synthstrand drop rate and Synthstrand ‘farm’ explained

Let’s start with Synthstrand. This first currency is obtained by defeating enemies. Whether in attacks or raids, all enemies can drop some, but the way it works is different from other materials and resources in the game.

Synthstrand’s drop rate is low, largely because it is time-controlled, with estimates of around 1 Synthstand dropping every two minutes. Discovered by alonie-homia on reddit, it means that no matter how many enemies you kill in that time, another one won’t appear until the next kill after those two minutes have passed.

This time gate seems to apply to all activities in the game and matches our first experiences with the Synthstrand releases.

Whenever you get Synthstrand, you will see an icon on the right side of the screen. For us, the drops didn’t appear on the screen every time, so check your inventory to confirm how much you’ve earned.

The community (via I3igB on reddit) has since discovered that, at the current rate, it will take 5 hours to earn enough Synthstrand to earn a Synthcord reward, and 53 hours to reach the transmog limit for a single character.

The only benefit of Synthstrand’s temporary nature is that it will arrive slowly regardless of what activity you are doing. That said, there is a ‘farm’ method if you want to accumulate Synthstand with as little effort as possible, and that’s through the now familiar AFK Shattered Throne farm, which allows you to progress beyond the first encounter and modify your loadout so you can continue. Kill the regenerating Thrall without risk of dying.

It’s most famous for getting Solstice of Heroes orbs and it works here too.

Esoterickk on YouTube explains this method in more detail:

The second step involves Synthcord. This currency can only be obtained by completing select rewards obtained by Ada-1. To do this, you will have to spend 150 Synthstrand. Fortunately, Ada-1 covers the first one for free.

Ahead of launch, Bungie provided the following list as examples of rewards we can expect:

Vanguard Synthcord Rewards

  • Complete attacks on playlists using specific subclasses
  • Accumulate points on Nightfall attacks.

Crucible Synthcord Rewards

  • Capture areas in Crucible Control games
  • Complete Crucible matches and defeat your opponents using specific damage types as equipment.

Gambit Synthcord Rewards

  • Send and defeat blockers in Gambit.
  • Defeat Primeval Envoys, high-value targets, and Primevals in Gambit.

Destinations Synthcord Rewards

  • Defeat Nightmares in any destination or in Nightmare Hunts.
  • Defeat bosses while defending the Blind Well within the Dreaming City.

Raids and Dungeons Synthcord Rewards

  • Complete the final encounter of any raid or dungeon.
  • Generate orbs of power in raids or dungeons.

For example, a Strike reward we chose had us defeating 20 champions in Nightfall Strikes. Therefore, expect the targets to always be random. Please note that if you choose the wrong reward for any reason, you will be partially refunded for the Synthstrand spent: 50 Synthstrand instead of 150.

Once you have collected your completed rewards and earned Synthcord, you will be able to exchange it for Synthweave.

How to get Synthweave in Destiny 2 explained

Finally, the final step. Synthweave can be obtained from the Loom (the massive device right behind Ada-1) by spending Synthcord. All you have to do is interact with the loom and once you have the coin ready, you are good to go.

From there, head to the Appearance Customization screen (found by pressing ‘S’ on the keyboard or Down on the D-pad from the Gears screen, then selecting the top right icon). Choose any of the ornaments you would like to choose for your legendary armor and purchase them (current cost is 1 Synthweave per ornament). Feel free to also equip him with a Shader, which can now be obtained only with Glimmer.

We know it’s an arduous process, but the advantage is that just by following the Ada-1 quest line, you will get 5 Synthweave per class, that is, 15 in total.

Lastly, if you want to skip the whole process, Synthweave templates are available for purchase on Eververse via the Guardian appearance screen, with the option to purchase a single Synthweave or a five-piece pack.

A single template will cost you 300 Silver, while the template pack costs 1000 Silver. For reference, 500 Silver costs £4.79 in the UK. There’s no need to worry about making the wrong purchase, as Bungie-confirmed templates can be applied to any class.
