Destiny 2 Strange Coins: How to get Strange Coins and how Starhorse bounties work explained

Strange Coins, the in-game currency introduced by Xur in Destiny 2, have taken a starring role during Bungie’s 30th anniversary update.

The currency has a new use related to Dares of Eternity, the seasonal activity that debuted with the update. Strange coins allow you to obtain particular rewards that, while more challenging in nature, can lead to better rewards.

This page explains how to get Strange Coins and how Starhorse rewards work to get the most out of them.

How to get rare coins in Destiny 2

Bungie’s 30th Anniversary event brings a new seasonal activity to participate in, and Strange Coins are a big part of it.

This currency, which will look familiar if you ever interacted with Xur in the original Destiny, plays a key role in the Dares of Eternity activity. Basically, you can use the currency to purchase rewards from Starhorse, the mythical character who joins Xur in this event.

In short, you can get Strange Coins from the following sources:

  • Activity The challenges of eternity
  • Playlist Activities like Gambit, Strikes, and Crucible
  • Heroic public events
  • Completing rewards

In our experience, the rate of decline has been surprisingly consistent. We did two rounds of Gambit, two rounds of Dares of Eternity, and one Strike, and we always received 1 Strange Coin for each.

Of course, your mileage may vary. The only downside is that you only get one rare coin at a time instead of several. To increase your chances, be sure to earn rewards for the corresponding activity before you jump into it.

The Season of the Depths is here along with the Into the Depths quest. You can also know how to go fishing! Don’t forget to keep an eye on the rotation schedule for the Lost Sector and King’s Fall challenges!

How Starhorse Rewards Work in Destiny 2

While Xur has rewards up for grabs in Treasure Hoard, Starhorse has more challenging rewards in case you want a higher risk chance at better rewards. Additionally, completing Starhorse bounties is one of the steps of the Forerunner mission.

Starhorse only accepts Strange Coins on their vendor screen. As such, Strange Coins can be used to purchase rewards and other items. These rewards, whether daily or weekly, are graded into different rarities (Bronze, Silver, and Gold) and add a layer of difficulty to the Dares of Eternity activity.

It’s no surprise to see Starhorse being so popular.

The highlight of Starhorse Bounties comes down to the objectives, which must be completed in a single run of Dares of Eternity. If you can’t, these will be reset and you will lose the reward.

The key is not to get greedy, but if you’re looking for greater challenges, this is where to look. If you’re looking for some examples, these are the daily and weekly Starhorse rewards that were available to us in the first week the DLC was available:

  • Pulse Combat (Silver Starhorse Daily Reward): Get final blows with the Pulse Rifle or quickly defeat combatants. Fighters defeated quickly with pulse rifles grant the most efficient progress (160,000 points required)
  • Laser Tag (daily reward from Silver Starhorse): Land final blows with the Trace Rifle or quickly defeat combatants. Fighters defeated quickly with tracer rifles grant the most efficient progress (160,000 points required)
  • Double Barrel (daily reward from Silver Starhorse): Land final blows with a shotgun or quickly defeat combatants. Fighters defeated quickly with a shotgun grant the most efficient progress (160,000 points required)
  • The Old Fashioned Way (Silver Starhorse Weekly Reward): Defeat combatants with charged or unloaded melee abilities, defeat combatants with weapons equipped in the Kinetic slot, and complete the activity with an impressive score (180,000 points required).
  • Bring the Overkill (Silver Starhorse weekly reward): Defeat fighters with your Super, disintegrate fighters with high-damage elemental finishing blows, and complete the activity with an impressive score (180,000 points required).
  • Matching Game (Gold Starhorse Weekly Reward): Defeat the fighters using a Void, Bow, or Solar weapon that matches your currently equipped subclass, defeat the fighters with any powerful weapon, and complete the activity with an incredible score (supposed require 300,000 points).

In terms of rewards, these range from XP to Paraversal Hauls (containers that can grant exotic gear, legendary gear, rare coins, or treasure keys), as well as upgrade cores.

If you’re curious what other items Starhorse has in store, here’s the full list (based on the first week of the event):

  • Legendary Engram: 3 Strange Coins
  • 1000 Glimmer: 5 rare coins
  • Paraversal Transport: 7 strange coins
  • Treasure Key: 10 Strange Coins

Good luck hunting for rare coins to complete Starhorse rewards!
