Destiny 2 Nightfall scoring, Nightfall Emblem rewards and Challenge Card modifiers explained

Destiny 2’s Nightfall is a special, ultra-difficult version of Strike, with a new challenge to face each week.

It’s not an easy task, but having rewards can be worth the effort, leaving aside the pure feeling of satisfaction.

They’ve changed a bit after launch, now focusing on Nightfall score rather than time and other modifiers, and here we’ll explain how to unlock Nightfalls and get challenge cards.

Please note that this page needs an update with the arrival of Destiny 2’s second year, so please note that some of the content may be out of date. In the meantime, read our Destiny 2 Forsaken guide and how to reach the new Destiny 2 level cap for an overview of what’s new and changed. Additionally, there is the return of the Thorn quest and the thorn ornament, Wishes of Sorrow and also our faithful friend Xur. Here’s the answer to where Xur is, Xur’s location, and what Xur is selling this week!

What are dusks and dusk scoring?

Nightfalls are essentially a hard version of a specific attack that changes with each weekly reset.

Each week, a new Strike from the list will be chosen to be Nightfall for the next seven days, adding considerably more difficult versions of enemies and also a greater number of high-ranking enemies such as captains and protected enemies.

Since February 2018, Nightfalls has moved from timed matches to rated matches. This means that players can beat Nightfall at their own pace, but those who can complete it quickly can earn additional rewards.

Scoring works in the following ways:

  • Scoring is based on team and each player’s score is added together for a unified total.
  • Scores come from kills and the use of Supers. While accuracy doesn’t matter, enemy types do: tougher enemies give you more points.
  • The value of new scores is halved after 15 minutes and then offers no scores after 18 minutes, incentivizing you to go fast.
  • Scores will also decrease over time, again, to reward players who complete it faster.

Dusk Rewards

Nightfalls, which was originally set to launch alongside Nightfall Score, will have unique rewards as part of the game’s March 27 update.

Until then, you can expect the following:

  • Loot drops up to the Destiny 2 power level cap.
  • Completion of the ‘Powerful Gear’ milestone.
  • A Nightfall Challenge card, which allows you to add new multipliers in an attempt to increase your score on future Prestige attempts.
  • Attack-specific emblems, which track your score and grant you auras and buffs above certain thresholds. Play each week to unlock an emblem for that Strike and improve your score each time that Strike arrives. Certain high scores are said to also unlock additional emblems.

In short, you will get something (loot) simply for completing Nightfall, and then you will receive emblems and challenge cards as an incentive to improve your career.

Nightfall Challenge Cards and Modifiers Explained

Upon completing a Dusk, a Challenge Card will appear. It’s located in the Consumables portion of your inventory and allows you to toggle various modifiers for when you tackle higher-level Prestige mode.

By doing so, you will earn more points. But depending on which modifiers you enable, you could end up having a worse race or having difficulty completing it. Be careful!

Modifiers currently in the game include:

Modifier Effect
Vacuum, Solar or Arc Singe Elemental damage to players and enemies increased by 25%
Extinguish If the entire team dies, the race ends.
power modifier Decreases your power level, giving you more points in return.

More will be released in the future as the new Nightfall scoring system is developed.

How to unlock Nightfalls in Destiny 2

Before unlocking Nightfall Strikes, you must first unlock Strikes, defeat two of them, and reach power level 230.

Haven’t you unlocked Strikes yet? Complete the ‘Fury’ story mission and speak to Zavala, unlocking Strikes as an option from your Director.

That unlocks the Strikes milestone, which requires you to complete any two Strikes from the list; you can do this by simply selecting it from the Director and diving into the playlist.

After that, check back with Zavala to get your reward and the Nightfall milestone will appear in your milestones tab. From there, you will see that you need to reach power level 230 or higher.

Once you reach that Power level, talk to Zavala again and he will unlock Nightfalls for you. Access them from the Strikes section of the Game Director and you’ll be ready to go.

How did Destiny 2 Nightfalls work previously?

From launch until February 2018, there were a set of modifiers that changed the way the game was played and could increase the time remaining on the clock. If time ran out, the race would end.

Ancient Dusk Modifiers:

  • Prism: Prism is a new way to use “burns”, which in the first Destiny were a fixed damage type (Arc, Void, or Solar) that dealt additional damage to enemies and caused you to take additional damage of that type. Now, under Prism, they rotate periodically during Nightfall Strike, showing what’s active at the bottom left of the screen. Mastering the use of that damage boost will play a big role in your success, so come equipped with a varied Fireteam or different items for weapons and your subclass.
  • Attrition: Health and shield regeneration is severely hampered. Defeat enemies to create ‘wells of light’ that can restore health and charge your Super. These act (and appear) in a very similar way to the Light Orbs that are generated through the use of Supers. It basically means that you have to be aggressive (or clear the battlefield from the safety of cover) to regain your health.
  • Momentum: Health and shield regeneration are disabled when standing, so you must run to replenish them. This means you have to run away from firefights to regain health, but the process is faster than normal shield regeneration, making it a surprising double-edged sword.
  • Torrent: This greatly increases the recharge rate of your grenades and your class ability. This is usually combined with Zero Hero and allows you to spam grenades to take out groups of enemies. This is the easiest and most fun mod, so even if you’re not a big Nightfalls fan, we recommend giving it a try.

The Season of the Depths is here along with the Into the Depths quest. You can also know how to go fishing! Don’t forget to keep an eye on the Lost Sector and King’s Fall challenge rotation schedule!

Ancient Nightfall Time Warps:

  • Killing Time: Killing enemies will add a small amount of time to the countdown timer, giving you a higher chance of completing Nightfall or completing any time-based Nightfall challenges. If you’re constantly short on time and can’t complete the attack faster, try quickly killing a few more enemies with things like grenades and supers in your way.
  • Rings: Jumping through the glowing rings along your path adds 30 seconds to your timer. Once you activate the first ring, more will appear and you’ll have about a minute to get as many as you can before they expire, so only activate them when you’re ready, ideally once you’ve taken out all nearby enemies.
  • Anomalies: Anomalies are energy clusters that, when triggered, will increase the timer. They usually appear hidden around the sides of objects, at the bottom of the edges of walkable areas, and at the top of corners. They glow blue, making them a little easier to spot from a distance. Get in the habit of looking behind you in every area, as they like to hide them in places you would miss without turning back. If you’re struggling, try learning their locations on a test and then play again to do it much faster.
  • Zero Hour: Unlike other Timewarp mods, there is no way to reload the countdown clock. In other ways, that means that the time you start with is all you have. Get underway!
