Destiny 2 Hammer of Proving explained: Hammer charges, Tribute Chests and how to equip the Hammer explained

The Destiny 2 Trial Hammer is a quest item introduced in Season of the Chosen.

Like the decoys in Season of the Hunt, the Hammer allows you to earn rewards by participating in the Battlegrounds seasonal activity.

By charging the hammer, you can visit the Prismatic Recaster to decipher the Umbral Engrams as you wish.

How the Hammer of Trial works in Destiny 2 in summary

To begin using the Hammer of Trial, you must progress through the seasonal quest Challenger’s Trial.

This begins as soon as you log into Destiny 2’s Season of the Chosen for the first time, and is essentially a tutorial on how the Hammer of Trial and the associated Battlegrounds activity works.

Although using the Trial Hammer is no different than the Decoy from Season of the Hunt, it is different enough that the steps involved are initially confusing.

Here is an overview of how to use the Test Hammer:

  1. Collect Cabal Gold from activities across the Solar System, from completing raids in playlists and the Crucible to public events.
  2. Use Cabal Gold to insert a medallion into the trial hammer (you can do this by inspecting the hammer on the quest screen)
  3. Complete a Battlegrounds match in the Vanguard playlist and use the Medallion Hammer to smash a Tribute Chest, adding a charge to the Hammer.
  4. Visit the HELM social space and use the Hammer charge to focus an engram in the Prismatic Recaster

That’s the gist of it, but if you want more details on how it works, the following sections on equipment and loading may be helpful.

How to ‘equip’ the Hammer of Trial in Destiny 2

As you progress through the Challenger Trial Mission, which presents you with the Trial Hammer, it is suggested that you equip it to complete the challenge steps.

Although you are tasked with “wielding the Hammer of Trial to loot Cabal Gold”, once it is collected as part of the questline, it is automatically enabled and “equipped” whenever you need to use it on a Tribute Chest.

Unfortunately, this means you can’t stomp around battlefields with a huge golden hammer, but the good news is that you don’t actually have to do anything – you’ll just have the hammer when needed.

With the slightly confusing part out of the way, let’s talk more about how to charge the hammer and find tribute chests.

Explanation of how to load the Hammer of Trial from Tribute Chests

Loading the Test Hammer is a two-step process. First, you must insert a medallion into the test hammer. You can do this by finding the Trial Hammer in the quest screen and then inspecting it.

From here, you can add Mods to the Hammer. For starters, there’s only one available: the Engraved Challenger Medallion, which costs 14 Cabal Gold. Once this is done, the Test Hammer can now be charged.

To charge the Hammer of Trial, you must find a Tribute Chest. Tribute chests appear at the end of a completed Battlegrounds activity in the Vanguard playlist, along with the normal activity chest.

Interact with the message and you will swing and smash the chest, adding a charge to the Hammer.

An important note on the above: must be a Battlegrounds activity selected from the Vanguard playlist. If you select a destination-specific Battlegrounds map, they will not spawn the Tribute Chest.

This surprised us, so be sure to check out the playlist if you want to charge up the Hammer!

The Season of the Depths is here along with the Into the Depths quest. You can also know how to go fishing! Don’t forget to keep an eye on the Lost Sector and King’s Fall challenge rotation schedule!

How to spend charges and unlock additional charges with the Trial Hammer

Now that the Hammer is charged, visit the HELM social space (found on the Tower director’s screen) and visit the Prismatic Recaster.

This is where you can “restrict” what you get from Umbral Engrams. These are divided into categories at three levels. The higher the level, the more specific you can set the reward.

The problem is that higher levels require more hammer charges, along with other requirements before they can be used, such as using weapons a set number of times.

Additionally, at the start of the Season of the Chosen, the Trial Hammer can only have a maximum of three charges. It is possible to upgrade the Hammer by gaining reputation on the War Table, and a possible upgrade offers more Charges to store.

Specifically, you must unlock the following upgrades:

  • Hammer Charge 1: Increases the number of charges from 3 to 5
  • Hammer Charge 2: Increases the number of charges from 5 to 7
  • Hammer Charge 3: Increases the number of charges from 7 to 10

It will take you a while to unlock them, but with three months left until the Season of the Chosen, there’s plenty of time to get there. Good luck!
