Destiny 2 Captain’s Logs explained: How to find smuggling compartments and cryptic notes for the Graven Scrawl challenge

How to unlock Presage collectibles and open contraband compartments throughout the ship.

Destiny 2 Captain’s Logs are collectible items that you can find by completing the Presage quest.

Also described as cryptic notes, there is a new Captain’s Log available each week, which will help you complete various objectives, including Bound in Memory and Graven Scrawl.

They also open the way to the contraband compartments, which are hidden areas spread throughout the ship, which also have a closed schedule each week. And no, unfortunately the captain’s journals have nothing to do with Star Trek.

How to Unlock Captain’s Logs for Bound in Memory and Graven Scrawl Objectives in Destiny 2

Collecting Captain’s Logs within Presage helps complete two objectives: the weekly Gravel Scrawl challenge, in which you must find three “cryptic notes”, and Bound in Memory, a triumph with 12 steps in total.

Captain logs are automatically deleted each time Presage is completed once you have completed it for the first time. In other words, once you’ve finished Presage for the second time, giving you your first random spin of Dead Man’s Tale, you’ll get your first Captain’s Log.

New captain logs were introduced into the game on a weekly basis (after each Tuesday reset). This meant that you were encouraged to replay Presage weekly, granting you another chapter in the Captain’s Log as you progressed.

Captain’s Logs also unlock contraband compartments in Presage for future matches. These are doors that are previously locked and can be opened by finding tablets scattered throughout the ship. Each Captain’s Log is linked to a specific contraband compartment, unlocked in sequence, which you can access on your next playthrough.

Until January 2022, this compartment was time-closed, meaning you had to wait until the next reset for the next compartment to open. However, at the end of the year, this no longer applies, meaning you can run it multiple times in a week and find a new Captain’s Log each time.

In summary, the captain’s journals and contraband compartments work like this:

  • Completing your second Omen will unlock your first Captain’s Log.
  • There will be a new Captain’s Log available, so to get all Captain’s Logs, complete Omen 12 times.
  • Each Captain’s Log you collect will allow you to open a new contraband compartment somewhere in Presage in a future game.

Although the captain’s logs are obtained automatically, you must actively find each contraband compartment that each unlocks by locating a tablet and then opening the chest inside to cross it off the list.

Destiny 2 Contraband Compartment Week 1 Location

When you first enter the ship after the outside platforming section, you will be in a pipe.

After the second left turn there is a vent you can shoot at behind a mushroom.

In here there is a tablet on the floor, which you can scan. Once this is done, the door in this area will open, revealing a chest.

If the tablet does not wish to be scanned, make sure you have completed Presage twice before this, which will give you the first Captain’s Log that will allow you to do so.

Destiny 2 Contraband Compartment Week 2 Location

Staying in the first set of vents after entering the ship, continue to the penultimate corner before going down to the hangar where you can open the door that leads to the place where you first started the mission.

In this corner there is a tablet. Scan it and then turn around to see the door that opened on the floor behind you.

Destiny 2 Contraband Compartment Week 3 Location

Following the vents at the start of the mission, you need to get a buff to get through the first burning wall.

In this room, take the path on the right side to find the tablet on the floor.

Scanning this opens the door on the right, where you can find the chest.

Destiny 2 Contraband Compartment Week 4 Location

Play until you reach the area before the trash compactor section, where you must flip three switches to make your way around electrified walls in the middle of a hangar.

After hitting the first switch and using the buff to get past the burning wall, you drop down before jumping again.

In this area, before you jump and continue, there is a tablet on the ground next to a door in the far corner.

Scan this and the door will open for you. You will then need another upgrade, found on the ledge above and behind where you came down, to access the chest inside.

The Season of the Depths is here along with the Into the Depths quest. You can also know how to go fishing! Don’t forget to keep an eye on the rotation schedule for the Lost Sector and King’s Fall challenges!

Destiny 2 Contraband Compartment Week 5 Location

Go to the location of the previous contraband compartment. From here, you need to jump out of this area and go to the next open part of the hangar with the electrified wall on your sides.

After jumping and before exiting, there is a door to your left.

In this room, take the left side and find the tablet you can scan on the floor. The door that opens is on the left, where you can find the chest.

Destiny 2 Contraband Compartment Week 6 Location

This tablet is found as soon as you enter the vent after the trash compactor section.

To find the chest, jump back onto the trash compactor and locate another floor panel that has opened up with the location.

Destiny 2 Contraband Compartment Week 7 Location

Shortly after the trash compactor is a combat section. This fight takes place in two areas: the starting room and then the hangar. Between these two places there is a corridor.

After passing the red-tinted corridor there is a dark section, and that is where you will find the tablet, on the floor next to a door to the left, which will open after interacting with it.

Destiny 2 Contraband Compartment Week 8 Location

In the second part of the combat section, in the hangar exposed to space, there is a door at the far end.

Head here and interact with the tablet on the ground to open the door and grab the chest.

Destiny 2 Contraband Compartment Week 9 Location

After the second part of the combat section, you will have to jump into the space between two hangars.

In this last hangar, where there is a suspended ship that you can use to climb to the vents above, there is a door at the other end. Next to it is a tablet on the floor that you can interact with, opening the door and guiding you to the chest.

Destiny 2 Contraband Compartment Week 10 Location

Once you’ve completed the combat section, head through the vent and down to the next area, which includes a series of puzzles with upgrades and switches.

As soon as you enter the initial room, turn right to find a door in the corner with the tablet on the floor. Interact with this to open the door and get the chest.

When you get here, turn right and hug the wall to the door.

Destiny 2 Contraband Compartment Week 11 Location

Halfway through the series of puzzles between the combat section and the final boss, you will descend into a series of vents lit with red lights. Inside these you will find the tablet and the door that will open.

Destiny 2 Contraband Compartment Week 12 Location

Play until the end of Presage. Before “stealing” the weapon and completing the mission, he interacts with the tablet near the computer consoles behind it. This will open a door in another part of the room (see it circled below) where he will find the final chest and a cutscene.

Once this is done, the Hidden Triumph is complete! Note that if you didn’t get it during the debut season, don’t worry: it will be available for the rest of Year 4 for you to earn.
