Dark Souls 3 – how to complete every NPC quest in one playthrough

Dark Souls isn’t a series that reveals its secrets easily, and that extends to its countless NPC side quests. It’s entirely possible, and surprisingly easy, to complete the game without encountering a single NPC who isn’t critical to the story, and many characters only make their presence felt once you’ve freed them from some distant, rarely visited corner of the map.

NPCs tend to come in two forms: those who become merchants at Firelink Shrine once found, and those who begin traveling through Lothric. Almost all NPCs, however, have their own (often obtuse) quest lines that, once completed, can yield a wide range of rewards, from exotic weapons and armor to special story moments and even secret endings.

Unfortunately, in most cases, completing an NPC’s side quest can be a real challenge. It’s incredibly easy to miss the trigger points that advance each NPC’s side quests as you explore the world, and even easier to do something that completely breaks the progression of these quest lines without even realizing it. Often, you will need to visit specific locations and perform certain tasks in a very precise order to advance a character’s story.

Advancing a single NPC’s questline to its conclusion can be a daunting task, but trying to juggle interlocking questlines for each of the dozen NPCs in the game can be a total nightmare. The idea, of course, is that you learn from the mistakes you make in your first playthrough of Dark Souls III and try something different in subsequent ones.

However, if you want to get the most out of a single game, we’re here to help. This guide walks you through the steps you will need to complete to conclude each NPC questline in a single run and claim the related rewards. Just keep this checklist handy and make sure you’ve completed all the tasks listed before moving on to the next boss battle.

Some important notes about this guide

• Due to the intertwined nature of most NPC side quests, it is difficult to discuss them without mentioning future events. You will find spoilers in this guide.

• A handful of quests, namely those for Anri of Astora, Yuria of Londor, Irina of Carim, and the Keeper of Fire, feature “good” and “dark” variants, with dramatically different conclusions. In these cases, you will only be able to complete one path per game, but we have highlighted the points where the missions diverge so you can choose how to proceed.

• In some cases, the progression of side quests depends on a large number of barely understood variables. We’ve included alternate routes for those missions that are known to be a bit complicated.

• Although Dark Souls III offers a certain degree of freedom in terms of how you approach its challenges, we have chosen a very specific path through the game to ensure that NPC side quests are not inadvertently interrupted. Other routes are possible, but it is not advisable to deviate from our plan unless you know exactly what you are doing. As such, the following NPC mini-guide assumes that you face the game’s bosses in this order:

• Vordt of the Boreal Valley (Lothric Castle) • Curse-Rotten Great Forest (Undead Settlement) • Crystal Sage (Path of Sacrifice) • Deacons of the Deep (Cathedral of the Deep) • Watchers of the Abyss (Forest Farron) • Yhorm the Giant (Unholy Capital) • Pontiff Sulyvahn (Irithyll of the Boreal Valley) • Aldrich, the Eater of Gods (Anor Londo) • Dancer of the Boreal Valley (Lothric Castle) • Dragonslayer Armor (Lothric Castle) • Lothric , Young Prince (Lothric Castle) • Ashen Soul (Firelink Shrine)

• Finally, if you are following this guide and can’t find the NPC you need in the indicated location, try forcing progression by entering and leaving the area several times. If that doesn’t work, try visiting their last known shelter to make sure you’ve completed the necessary steps to move forward.

On the next page, we will explain everything you need to do before fighting Vordt of the Boreal Valley.
