In 1992, civil war triggered famine in Somalia, and the United Nations sent troops to help maintain peace. But by 1993, conflicts broke out between this UN force and local militias led by Mohamed Farah Aidid. U.S. President Bill Clinton dispatched a Ranger task force, including Army Rangers, Delta Force soldiers and helicopter crews, to capture Aidid. He took the Red Cross food and declared himself president.
The mission begins with the Rangers and Delta Force capturing some of Aidid’s top advisors. But during this time, they came under heavy fire from militiamen. A soldier named Todd Blackburn fell from a helicopter and was seriously injured. He was returned to safety, while another soldier, John Grimes, became separated from his unit.
Things got worse when two helicopters were shot down. One of the crash sites is safe, but the other is too far away for rescuers to reach. Two Delta Force soldiers tried to protect the second crash site but were killed and the pilot was captured. The situation was dire and efforts to rescue the trapped soldiers faced roadblocks and heavy enemy fire.
Finally, after a night of fighting, help arrived and the injured were evacuated. The ending title explains that many Americans and Somalis died on this mission and led to the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Somalia.
