Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla – health system: How to upgrade rations, get food and health regen explained

Health in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla works a little differently than previous games in the series, with a new health system based on food, rather than built-in health regeneration.

If you’re a little puzzled (it’s not immediately clear how it works at first), don’t worry. Here on this page we explain how to heal yourself and how to get rations to do so, plus anything else you need to know.

A look at what’s coming after the release of Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla health system explained: how to heal and is there health regeneration?

As we mentioned earlier, Valhalla’s health system is slightly different from previous Assassin’s Creed games.

For one thing, there’s no automatic health regeneration – you have to actively do something if you want to regain health, as it won’t come back over time.

How to heal yourself in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

There are three ways to heal yourself in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla:

  1. Consume a ration: At first you can store one ration at a time, but you can increase the capacity of your rations as you progress. Press right on the D-pad or H on the keyboard to consume one.
  2. Eat foods, such as bush berries, wild mushrooms, or interactive food pots, baskets, or plates found around the world.
  3. Sleep in Your Bed: Unlocked once you unlock your Settlement in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. Sleep in your bed in the longhouse to fully recover.

So most of the time, you’ll heal by eating rations or food, and the option of sleeping in your bed is a bit impractical for adventurers wandering all over Anglo-Saxon England.

Food is usually found in the form of berry bushes in the world, either in the countryside or on the outside of buildings and cities. In those cities, including your own settlement, you will find more “standard” food, usually in the form of a steaming pot of stew over the fire, or on the tables of dining rooms and homes.

Portions, meanwhile, are closely related to food, but work slightly differently. They heal with more than food and can be carried with you to use as needed, so they should be your priority for healing, while foraging is more of a backup. Then you’ll want to strategize how to use your rations, so to learn more about them, read below.

How to get rations in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla

Rations form the core of the health system in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, and will be the main thing you want to focus on when thinking about managing your health in and out of battle.

How rations work and how to get them

When you collect food from the environment (berries, etc.) and you are not at full health, you will be healed. But if you do If they are already at full health, they will count towards rations. Several berry bushes (or fewer of other “proper” foods such as those available in a pot or on the table) are needed to prepare a single serving.

So, to obtain rations, it is necessary to collect food in any of its various forms. You can see your progress toward getting a ration at the bottom left of the screen: there’s a small circle around a number, and once the bar in that circle fills up, you’ll get another ration.

How to increase ration storage in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla

At the beginning of the game, you will only be able to carry one ration with you at any time. If you try to collect more food while you have full health and full ration capacity, you simply will not be allowed to collect it.

Obviously, just a measly ration isn’t good, because you’re likely to take damage pretty regularly and it would be useful to be able to heal yourself more than once during combat without having to run off in search of berries to eat. .

How to increase ration storage

So to increase ration storage you need to go to the Inventory section of the menu and on the left you will see the rations icon. Hover over it and press the button prompted to update it. You’ll need resources, specifically leather and iron ore, to do so, and the amount required starts out fairly low and increases with each upgrade. For reference, the first upgrade costs 100 Iron and 50 Leather, and the next upgrade costs 300 Iron and 140 Leather.

Simply gather more leather (from chests or game animals) and iron ore (from chests or by smashing those little piles of shiny rocks) and head to the menu to upgrade your storage when you feel like your current ration capacity isn’t enough.
