9 new things you need to know about Anthem

Anthem Javelins and classes

As you may already know, there are four ‘classes’, or Javelins, in Anthem, each with a unique playstyle.

In terms of combat-usable features, each Javelin carries two weapons and then comes equipped with five other ‘skills’: two primary equipment slots, plus a melee skill, an ultimate skill, and a support skill slot. To give you an overview of all of this, here’s a fantastic community infographic, made by redditor FireDragon04:

They also have a unique, different combo effect unique to each class. We explain these, and combos in general, in much more detail in our guide dedicated to Anthem combos, primers and detonators, but in summary: using combos will be your main means of dealing significant damage and getting the most out of it. any of them will make a big difference in your chances of success.

Who detonates A Combo (you can detonate your own, or your squadmates can combine to set up or detonate each other’s Combos), is the player who activates the additional Combo effect for their class. So, for example, if you, a Colossus, prime a target with a Flamethrower ability and your ally, a Ranger, detonates it with a Homing Missile ability, then it is the unique combo effect of the Ranger class that activates. .

Finally, in addition to all those active abilities and effects, there are the Components. These are effectively a set of “passive” modifiers that you can equip your Javelin with, offering all sorts of bonuses, from greatly increased health and shields to larger magazine sizes, specific damage type bonuses, and more. You’ll unlock more slots for these as you progress through the pilot levels by earning XP, up to a total of six slots available at the level 30 cap.

So to get the most out of your Javelin build and that Javelin class, you need to consider everything that’s available to you: the weapons, the feel and playstyle of the Javelin, the various equipment and abilities you can equip, and that Additional combo effect exclusive to each class. Get together a good complementary build that makes the most of all this and you will fly.

How to Unlock New Javelins and Trade or Change Javelins in Anthem

The situation for unlocking Javelins in the full Anthem game is different and simpler than in the pre-release demos you may have already played.

How to unlock Javelins and get new Javelins in Anthem

You’ll start the game in a standard Ranger outfit, as a new recruit getting familiar with your equipment in a sort of prologue mission.

However, once you complete that tutorial-like introduction to the game, you’ll have your first choice of costume and can choose any of the four. Interestingly, the plan seemed to have originally been to put you in a Ranger suit from the start, but developer BioWare changed this to the current free-choice situation, so that the Ranger would feel less like a “default” option.

Here is the Javelin unlock screen.

How to unlock new Javelin suits in Anthem

To unlock a second Javelin, you must reach a specific pilot level – the pilot level is what you go up when you gain experience in the standard game and get various rewards for reaching certain levels. Here is a list of the levels where you will get a new Javelin unlock:

  • Level 2: Unlock a javelin of your choice
  • Level 8: Unlock a javelin of your choice
  • Level 16: Unlock a javelin of your choice
  • Level 26: Unlock a javelin of your choice

In short, leveling up your pilot is achieved by earning XP simply by playing: completing missions, killing enemies, completing daily, weekly and monthly challenges, etc. You come out of the introductory mission with that initial Ranger suit at level 2, hence that first Javelin pick, and then begin your six-level grind to level 8 for the next one!

Once you reach the correct level for a new Javelin, go to the center of Fort Tarsis and simply head to the Forge, a small computer terminal just on the right side of the platform where your suit rests, and upon reaching that level, say Level 8: The first screen you will encounter is the “Javelin Unlock” screen, where you can make your choice.

How to change Javelin in Anthem

Fortunately, swapping out Javelins once you’ve unlocked them is nice and easy.

After reaching level 8, 16, or 26 and unlocking a new Javelin in the Forge, the next screen you will access in the Forge is the equipment screen, where you make the usual selection of equipment and weapons. (This is always the screen you see when you start Forge regardless.)

Simply press Triangle/Y/R (for PlayStation/Xbox/PC), as indicated at the bottom left of the Loadout screen, which will take you to the Javelins page.

From here, you can select the Javelin of your choice and exit to start playing. Note that we found a strange bug where visual changes, or changes to Javelin, were not registering after exiting Forge – if you look at your suit on the podium and notice that it hasn’t changed after making adjustments, simply go back . Enter the Forge and exit again, and then it should change correctly at Fort Tarsis.

Also worth knowing: you can actually have up to five different builds, or ‘loadouts’, for each Javelin stored in the Forge, to quickly jump between them, which is great if you want to have, say, two builds for your Colossus. : one to auto-combine in solo play and another to coordinately combine with your teammates in squads, for example. Or if you just want to experiment!

That’s it for now for our class guide, but be sure to check back over time as the community gets caught up in the game and the most optimal builds start to evolve.
