US-India AI Initiative: Why in the News?

United States India Artificial Intelligence, USIAI initiative has been launched to improve technological relations between the two countries. DST Secretary Ashutosh Sharma, raising the curtain at the event, spoke about the importance of expanding the science and technology relationship between India and the United States. This would also be helpful in solving the problems of both countries and overcoming barriers to growth, he said.

Sharma also added that “research and technology in artificial intelligence is being promoted and implemented in the country through a network of 25 technology centers that function as a triple helix created under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM -ICPS)”.

US-India AI Initiative: Details

It is an initiative of the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) and was established in March 2000.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India and the US Department of State are respective nodal departments of the IUSSTF.

USIAI would focus on AI cooperation in critical areas that are priorities for both the United States and India.

India-US AI Initiative: Importance

  1. The cooperation will provide the opportunity to discuss the emerging AI landscape and address the challenges posed by developing an AI workforce.
  2. According to the official statement, “USIAI will serve as a platform to discuss opportunities, challenges and barriers for bilateral collaboration in AI research and development, enable innovation in AI, help share ideas to develop an AI workforce, and recommend modes and mechanisms to catalyze partnerships.”
  3. USIAI would help AI cooperation in critical areas such as healthcare, smart cities, materials, agriculture, energy and manufacturing that are useful to both countries.

India is ready:

  1. India recently launched a national AI strategy through NITI Ayog and National AI Portal (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology).
  2. It has also spread AI in various sectors such as education, health, agriculture and commerce, etc.
  3. Also MyGov Corona Helpdesk Chatbot was the winner at CogX 2020 in two categories: Best Innovation for Covid-19 – Society and People’s Choice Covid-19 Overall Winner.
  4. India is also a member of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI).
  5. India reported a 45% increase in the use of Artificial Intelligence, the highest among all countries

Artificial intelligence:

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and imitate their actions. AI can also be used for any machine that demonstrates traits associated with the human mind, such as learning and problem solving. Artificial intelligence has the ability to rationalize and take actions that can achieve a specific goal. AI includes technologies such as machine learning, pattern recognition, big data, neural networks, proprietary algorithms, etc.

Alok Bansal, Executive Director, Global Business Process Management, Visionet Systems, says: “A notable advantage of AI is its ability to improve operational efficiency. By automating repetitive tasks and using intelligent algorithms, AI streamlines processes and reduces manual effort. This leads to greater productivity, profitability and optimal resource allocation for financial institutions”.
