Shields in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword work differently compared to those in other Zelda entries.
There should be room in your adventure bag for your shield and there are three types to choose from: wooden, iron and scary. Shields also have health meters and can be upgraded.

Differences between wooden, iron and fear shields in Zelda: Skyward Sword explained
There are three types of shields, in addition to the Hylian Shield, for you to choose from in Skyward Sword: Wood, Iron, and Frightened. Each type of shield has its own advantages and disadvantages depending on which part of the surface world you plan to visit, so it’s important to choose your shield wisely.
Your shield is stored in the adventure bag.
You can purchase the Wooden Shield at Rupin’s Gear Shop after you have completed the game’s introduction to Skyloft. Meanwhile, the Iron and Scared Shield will unlock as you progress through the game.
The Wooden Shield line consists of the Wooden Shield, Branded Shield and Braced Shield. These shields are good for protecting you from electrical attacks, but are useless when it comes to fire.
The Iron Shield will be available for purchase once you have completed the Skyview Temple. Can be upgraded to Reinforced Shield and Fortified Shield. While all three are excellent for fighting fires, they will not provide protection against electrical attacks.
Finally, the Holy Shield line will unlock after you defeat The Imprisoned for the first time. The Holy Shield can be upgraded to Divine Shield and Goddess Shield. All of these shields can provide protection against fire, electric, and cursed attacks.
The health meter of these shields will also slowly regenerate if they take any damage. However, it is important to note that these shields can still be broken.
Shield health meter and how to repair a broken shield in Zelda: Skyward Sword explained
Each shield in Skyward Sword, aside from the Hylian Shield, has a health meter, which will decrease when the shield absorbs a hit. If you don’t repair your shield, it will break leaving you defenseless. (Unless you brought a backup…)
Your shield’s health meter will decrease if it is hit by an attack.
A shield’s health meter will grow as you upgrade it, and if you’re using the Holy Shield line, its health meter will regenerate over time.
The only way to repair a shield is to visit the scrap shop in the Skyloft bazaar and pay to have it fixed. This is cheaper than buying an essential new shield if you’re using an upgraded shield, because you won’t have to gather the materials needed to upgrade it again.
If your shield is about to break, we recommend unequipping it so it can remain safe in your adventure bag until you can fix it.
How to upgrade a shield in Zelda: Skyward Sword
It is essential to upgrade your shield collection in Skyward Sword, because it will increase your defensive prowess and health gauges. You can upgrade your shield, along with other items such as the Slingshot, by visiting the Scrap Shop in the Skyloft Bazaar.
To complete an upgrade you will need a specific amount of rupees and a number of materials, which you will collect by defeating monsters and through exploration. It is also possible to buy the materials from Rupin when night falls in Skyloft; although the materials he offers will be random each night.
To upgrade the Wooden Shield, you will need:
- Mark Shield: 30 Rupees, 2 Amber Relics, 1 Jelly Drop, and 1 Monster Claw
- Reinforced Shield: 50 Rupees, 3 Amber Relics, 2 Monster Claws, 1 Ornamental Skull, and 2 Tumbleweeds
Upgrading the Iron Shield requires:
- Reinforced Shield: 50 Rupees, 2 Eldin Ore, 2 Monster Claws, and 2 Ornamental Skulls.
- Fortified Shield: 100 Rupees, 1 Bluebird Feather, 3 Eldin Ore, 3 Monster Claws, and 2 Tumbleweeds.
Finally, for Scared Shield upgrades, you will need:
- Divine Shield: 100 Rupees, 2 Bird Feathers, 1 Dusk Relic, and 3 Ornamental Skulls
- Shield of the Goddess: 150 Rupees, 1 Blue Bird Feather, 3 Bird Feathers, 4 Dusk Relics, and 3 Monster Horns

How to unlock the Hylian Shield in Zelda: Skyward Sword
The Hylian Shield is the best shield in Skyward Sword, because its larger size provides more protection and happens to be indestructible.
However, you can’t just go out and buy this shield. Instead, you must wait until you have obtained the Thunder Dragon section of the Hero’s Song.
After this, the Thunder Dragon will offer you the opportunity to try out his Enlightenment Round. This minigame allows you to relive the boss battles you have fought so far, with the exception of Bilopathy.
The Enlightenment Round has some restrictions.
The only item you can use from your Adventure Bag during this minigame is your shield, and to earn the Hylian Shield, you must successfully defeat seven bosses. You must also finish the boss run there if you want to receive the shield.
If you do not have space for the Hylian Shield in your Adventure Bag or Item Check, then you will be rewarded with 1000 Rupees, which is the same reward you will receive if you have already earned the Hylian Shield.
