What is Rotary International?
Rotary International was founded in Chicago, Illinois, and is an organization dedicated to humanitarian service, world peace, and goodwill. Paul Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey met in room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago on February 23, 1905. It was the inaugural meeting of the Rotary Club. They decided to call the new club “Rotary” because of the practice of rotating meeting places.

World Day for Understanding and Peace 2023: History
The first meeting that led to the founding of Rotary International is remembered as the World Day of Understanding and Peace. Paul P. Harris, a lawyer, organized a meeting of his business partners in Chicago. He sought to gather a group of businessmen free from political and religious restrictions.
Before needing its own space, Rotary initially met in its members’ offices. Rotary clubs were subsequently founded in four more cities in the United States, and as the organization eventually expanded internationally, its name changed from the Rotary Club to the International Association of Rotary Clubs and, later, to Rotary International.
World Day of Understanding and Peace 2023: Importance
At eight universities around the world, Rotary International has established Rotary Centers for International Studies on peace and conflict resolution. The company also offers a graduate study program called the Rotary Peace and Conflict Resolution Program, for which 75 fellows are selected each year.
