World Radio Day 2023: Theme
In 2023, the theme for World Radio Day is “Radio and Peace”, which aims to focus on the importance of independent radio in promoting peace and preventing conflict.
The theme for World Radio Day 2021 is ‘New World, New Radio’. The theme was decided to keep in mind the services provided by the medium in the midst of the current COVID-19 pandemic. It is divided into three subparts, mentioned below:
1- Evolution: The world changes and the radio evolves. It refers to the resilience of the radio and its sustainability.
2- Innovation: The world changes and radio adapts and innovates. It has to adopt new technologies to continue being the means of mobility par excellence and to be accessible everywhere and for everyone.
3- Connection: The world changes and the radio connects. Highlights the services of radio to our society during natural disasters, socioeconomic crises, epidemics, etc.
World Radio Day: History
The Executive Board of UNESCO recommended to the General Conference the proclamation of World Radio Day. In 2011, UNESCO carried out an extensive consultation process on the recommendation of Spain. The Spanish Radio Academy project leader received support from several stakeholders, including major international broadcasters and broadcasting unions and associations. Finally, in 1946, United Nations Radio Day was celebrated, proposed by the Director General of UNESCO. The 36th session of the General Conference of UNESCO proclaimed February 13 World Radio Day. The United Nations General Assembly formally endorsed UNESCO’s proclamation of World Radio Day on 14 January 2013. At the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly, a resolution was adopted to proclaim February 13 as World Radio Day.

The main objective of celebrating World Radio Day is to raise awareness among the public and the media to increase the importance of radio. It also encourages decision makers to establish and provide access to information through radio, improve networking and generate a kind of international cooperation between broadcasters.

Several journalism universities and media NGOs also celebrate World Radio Day, keeping the 2023 theme in focus. Commercial and state radio stations also celebrate the day on air and invite experts and intercultural communicators to discuss traditions and cultural heritage. Journalism students make multilingual broadcasts on student radio and discuss the development of their country. They also share their multimedia content through social networks.

Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation used in communication technologies such as television, mobile phones and radios. These devices receive radio waves that convert them into mechanical vibrations in the speaker to generate sound waves. The radio frequency spectrum is a small part of the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum.
The electromagnetic spectrum is divided into seven regions based on decreasing wavelength, increasing energy, and frequency. All wireless technologies use radio waves to communicate, whether it is a cell phone, baby monitor, cordless phone, etc.
Therefore, World Radio Day is celebrated on February 13 every year to raise awareness about radio as a means of providing information about various cultures and traditions. For a century it has played an important role in people’s lives, which is why this year’s theme focuses on radio and its diversity.
