Major Bakhtawar Singh Brar is one of the oldest veterans of the Indian Army. The man served in the Kumaon Regiment. Sadly, the man died in the United States on Monday. At the time of his death, the veteran was 109 years old.

Born in Faridkot district in November 1913, Major Brar first served in Faridkot’s own state forces. He then went on to serve in the 6th Kumaon Regiment, before retiring in 1963.

In the year 1934, Major Brar joined the State Forces of the Maharaja of Faridkot. The veteran also received the Mention in Dispatches.

The award was given by the King of England in the year 1942. He received the award for leading and directing his company in Waziristan against the Pathans.

In 1945, the man was commissioned into the 6th Kumaon Regiment. He witnessed action in World War II in Burma. In November 1957, Major Brar was assigned to remove snow in a rescue operation in Baltal. For this, Major Brar again received the Mention in Dispatches.

In the year 1959, Major Brar led a contingent of 6 Kumaon in the Republic Day Parade. He also received the ‘Commendation Card’ from the Chief of Army Staff for his services in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in the year 1960. In the month of March 1960, the man was posted to 111 Infantry Battalion .

Gurnam Kaur Brar is the wife of Major Brar. The couple has two sons: Harbinder Singh, a doctor by profession, and Maj Manjit Singh Brar, a retired army officer who served in 12 Kumaon.

After his retirement, Major Brar decides to become a farmer in California and thus settles there. Surprisingly, he became one of the richest farmers in California.
