Pawan Khera, a senior Congress leader, had been accused for his comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a press conference.
The Supreme Court bench comprising Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice MR Shah and Justice PS Narasimha stated that “in order to protect the petitioner till the date when he applies for regular bail before the jurisdictional court after transfer of the FIRs to one and the same jurisdiction, we direct that till the next date of listing, the petitioner be released on interim bail by the court of the competent magistrate at Delhi, where he will be produced this afternoon. The previous order will remain in effect until Tuesday.”
The provisional bail granted by the Supreme Court was granted until February 28.
Who is Pawan Khera?
Pawan Khera’s political journey began with the youth wing of the INC in the year 1989. However, the leader left the Congress after the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in the year 1991.
The leader, however, once again shook hands with the party in the year 1998. It was then that Pawan Khersa became political secretary to Sheila Dixit, the then chief minister of Delhi. Pawan Khera held the position until Sheila Dixit’s term ended in 2013.
Pawan Khera has appeared on countless television and debate shows representing the Indian National Congress.
Before the 2019 elections, the man also became the convener of an election committee of the party in the Lok Sabha elections. The man is currently the Chairman of Media and Publicity of the All India Congress Committee along with a Congress spokesperson, according to Pawan Khera’s social media accounts.
What did Pawan Khera say about the Prime Minister?
At a press conference held in Delhi to demand a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe against the Adani Group, Khera made a controversial remark. Pawan Khera reportedly referred to the Prime Minister as “Narendra Gautamdas Modi”.
The man commented while criticizing the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) government regarding the Gautam Adani-led business conglomerate.

In response to the comments made by Pawan Khera, Samuel Changsan, a BJP member in Assam, approached the police station and booked Pawan Khera under Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy), 153 A, 153 B (1) of IPC (promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, etc.), 500 (defamation), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to cause breach of peace), 505 (1) (2) ( Statements that lead to public harm). Complaints have also been filed against the man in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
In his defence, Pawan Khera expressed that he was genuinely confused by the Prime Minister’s middle name.
