The Sub-Detection Unit is a local specialized material found in the northern Fontaine area introduced in Genshin Impact with version 4.1.
It is used as an Ascension material for Wriothesley, a new 5-star cryogenic character in Genshin Impact that you meet in Fontaine’s Archon Quest, but the material may also be needed to level up other characters in the future.
Unfortunately, you can’t farm Sub-Sensing Units indefinitely, as there is a two-day respawn time, so we’ll cover where to find Sub-Sensing Units below so you can get as many as possible in a farming route.

What are Sub-Detection Units used for in Genshin Impact?
The Sub-Detection Unit is a material that resembles a mechanical bug found in the Fontaine region north of the Court of Fontaine in Genshin Impact. While we recommend that you farm them above ground, you can also find Subdetection Units underground, but you must complete side quests and puzzles to access most of these areas.

The only character who currently needs Sub-Detection Units is Wriothesley, who requires 168 Sub-Detection Units for full Ascension. As there are 72 Subdetection Units in Fontaine, a minimum of three days of cultivation are needed to reach this number.
Hydro Archon Furina is coming, but for now in version 4.1, Neuvillette and Wriothesley debut, and you’ll need sub-detection units for Wriothesley. Where to find Sub-Detection Unit locations in Genshin Impact
Sub-Sensing Units are usually found in groups of two or four, so when you come across a location you can usually collect multiple Sub-Sensing Units, which can reduce farming time.
Keep an eye out for their flashing bodies when you are near a location to detect Sub-Sensing Units, as they could be flying or just relaxing on a surface.

Here are details on all the areas where you can find Sub-Detection Unit locations in Genshin Impact:
Mount Esus East
There are 15 sub-detection units that can be found in the Mont Esus East area, which is located north of the Court of Fontaine. We recommend making liberal use of Teleport Waypoints here in order to reduce travel time.

To farm, start with the four northwest Sub-Sensing Units, teleport back to the center of the area, head southeast to collect three along the coast, and then use the Statue of the Seven to quickly collect four units around the area . If you’ve unlocked it, you can also use the underground Teleport Waypoint in the northern waters to quickly get two more units.
The two southernmost Sub-Detection Units on Mont Esus East take the longest to reach, as you need to climb the mountain a bit to reach them.
Experimental Field Generator Area
The Experimental Field Generator area is the region of land east of Mont Esus East, and there are 18 Sub-Detection Units to find here, but we recommend skipping the seven found underground in the east, unless you have completed the quest required secondary that gives you easy access to your underground locations.

To farm, start at the southern Teleport Waypoint and glide towards the broken aqueduct to collect two Sub-Sensing Units, then glide further down to bring one closer. Then, use the Academic Assembly Hall waypoint in the middle and move down and west to collect the other nine materials.
New Fontaine Research Institute
There are 28 Sub-Detection Units to find in the New Fontaine Research Institute area. Once again, you should use Teleport Waypoints when you can to reduce travel time.

When farming, start with the New Fontaine Research Institute teleport waypoint right in the middle of the area, go up to get the unit at the top, then go down the institute building to collect the rest and go slightly towards the this to arrive. two more next to some wooden boxes. Use the same Institute waypoint to find the nearby northern units, then move west towards the coast, collecting all the sub-detection units on your way.
Near the coast, use the northwest waypoint and collect the materials around it, then use the northernmost waypoint to slide down and get more units before entering the cave at the end of the path marked on your map to collect your materials here.
Finally, use the southwest waypoint to bring the two Sub-Detection Units closer to the broken bridge (one is hidden in a brown container that you must destroy).
Central Laboratory Ruins
There are 11 sub-detection units that can be found in the Central Laboratory Ruins area. Once again, you should use Teleport Waypoints when you can to reduce travel time.

For your farming route, we suggest starting first at the northeastern Teleport waypoint to go south and get the units by the river, then use the waypoint west of it and work your way up until you get two more (if you’ve resolved the puzzle to enter the door of the small building).
Finally, use the Teleport Waypoint on the east side of the river and follow the path down, or use the one next to the river in the Experimental Field Generator area to enter a ruined circular hut marked with a white circle on our map above. Although this does not appear on the official HoYoverse map, the wooden boxes inside actually contain five Sub-Detection Units when broken.
