Protests in France against the pension reform!

There have so far been four rounds of protests in France regarding plans to reform France’s pension system put forward by President Emanuel. Around 960,000 people took part in marches on Saturday in Nice, Toulouse, Paris, Nantes and Marseille, as well as other cities. According to authorities, there have been around 93,000 participants. Surely this has been seen as large numbers of people protesting through demonstrations in the capital in opposition to the pension proposals.

Much to the relief of the authorities and many ordinary people, railway workers’ strikes did not take place. This means that Paris trains and metro operated normally during these protests. However, half of the flights from Orly, Paris’s second largest airport, were canceled at noon on Saturday due to the sudden strike by air traffic controllers.

Saturday’s protests showed enormous unrest in the country. Several rubbish bins and a car were set on fire on a boulevard in central Paris when police tried to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.

According to Paris police, about eight people have been arrested for violations such as possession of a firearm and vandalism.

Banners in the French capital’s Place de la République read emotional messages such as “I don’t want my parents to die at work.” It would not be wrong to say that not only individuals, but also entire families were part of the demonstrations.

If we look at the opinion polls, the two conclusions that emerge are the distaste for the president and the growing opposition to the reform. President Macron, however, stated that he is working on a key campaign promise he made before coming to power in 2017.

A tough political battle is what the president’s government faces in parliament. The battle would last another few weeks and months.
