Quebec’s new language law!
Officially titled “A law that respects French, the official and common language of Quebec,” the new law aims to reform multiple fragments of Quebec legislation. Among them is the Charter of the French Language. These reforms touch on concepts such as education, immigrant rights, health and more.
What do ministers have to say?
Simon Jolin-Barrette, minister in charge of the French language, states that since Quebec is a French province, it should use its official language before the public.
“One thing is certain: if we want to improve the level of French here in Quebec, we must first act in the state,” he said. “If we want citizens to use French more, the State of Quebec must set an example,” he added.
However, the bill has been frowned upon on multiple fronts. This includes the use of the notwithstanding clause, which allows provinces to override fundamental freedoms conferred by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Rather than simply applying the clause to some specific parts of Bill 96, the government has applied the clause to the entire bill. This made all aspects of the law immune to almost all legal challenges based on the letter.
