How many parties are participating in the Delhi civic polls today?
While the Congress has fielded candidates for only 247 seats, the BJP and AAP have fielded 250 candidates.
In comparison, the Janata Dal (United) has 22 candidates, while the Nationalist Congress Party has candidates in 26 constituencies.
Asaduddin Owaisi, MP from Hyderabad and leader of the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen, is contesting in 15 constituencies, while the Bahujan Samaj Party has 132 candidates on its ballot.
What MCD issues are at the center of civic polls?
- 1) The bitter conflict between the BJP, which currently controls the MCD, and the AAP, the ruling party in the national capital, has brought sanitation to the fore. The never-ending saga of Yamuna river foam, Ghaziabad landfill problem and bad roads have dominated the election chapter throughout.
- As the city battles rising population density, traffic problems continue to be a nightmare for locals. Much of the public dissatisfaction with the way the MCD carries out its functions has been caused by excessive commercialization, illegal constructions and narrow streets, particularly in areas of Old Delhi.
- The parking problem is partly due to the traffic problem.
- The BJP responded to AAP’s criticism on the landfill issue by criticizing the air pollution crisis in the Union Territory. Deteriorating winter air quality in Delhi has been a problem for long. The city woke up to an AQI of around 400 as it prepared to cast its votes in Sunday’s civic elections and faced the unyielding challenge of making Delhi “livable”.
- The additional pressure on the water supply caused by illegally constructed buildings is a separate issue.
What are MCD’s key responsibilities?
MCD, one of the largest municipal organizations in the world, is in charge of managing primary schools, hospitals and other basic civic services for the public. It is also responsible for road cleaning, maintenance and construction. The main functions of the MCD are
