E-Passport: Ausaf Saeed, Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Consular, Visas, Passports and Overseas Indian Affairs) stated in a press conference that late 2022 or early next year could see the arrival of e-passports. . However, this does not mean that existing book-style passports are of no use. The man stated that the new electronic passport will be similar to the booklet-type passport, but with an additional chip incorporated.
T Armstrong Changsan, director of passports, explained that the e-passport chip will contain all the passport holder’s data printed on the passport. This includes the name, address, birth details and more of the passport holder.
The back cover of the passport would incorporate a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip and antenna, which would help officials check and verify traveler information easily and quickly.

The objective
The aim of launching an e-passport is to reduce the chances of passports being forged while making them tamper-proof. This would thus improve security.
It is not mandatory to switch to an e-passport as of now, however, switching to an e-passport would increase the ease.
Advantages of the electronic passport
The benefits of Indian e-passport are:
- There would be no need for passengers with e-passports to stand in long queues for hours. Thanks to the electronic passport, the data will be scanned in a matter of seconds.
- The e-passport will reduce cases of fraud as it contains biometric records of passengers.
- No one could erase the information from the passport.
How to apply for the electronic passport?
The steps are quite simple.
- Visit Passport Seva website. Press the “Sign Up Now” button or simply log in with your existing ID.
- Click the “Request New Passport” or “Passport Reissue” button.
- Provide the necessary details. Click the “Submit” button.
- Click “Pay and Schedule Appointment” to make the payment.
Finally, print the receipt or purchase confirmation SMS in POPSK/PSK/PO.
Updated security for electronic passports
Electronic passports that meet the security needs of quantum computing have now been launched as the prototype using a quantum computer resistant version of the EAC protocol is developed.
Protects the passport holder’s biometric information during authentication.
- According to the recent update, this security controller is manufactured by Infineon Technologies and can protect the biometric and demographic data contained in e-passports from conventional and quantum computers.
- This is the first technology to ensure electronic passports that meet the security needs of the quantum computing era.
How does the Prototype work?
- This prototype uses a quantum computer-resistant version of the extended access control (EAC) protocol and protects the biometric information of the passport holder during authentication through it.
- This method allows data to be transferred between the ePassport and checkpoint terminals contactlessly.
- Electronic passports using the updated methods are also compatible with the current established structures.
- This technology uses the cryptographic methods, Dilithium and Kyber, which were carefully selected by the US National Standards Institute (NSIT) in 2022.
- This technology was developed with the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security (AISEC) and the Bundesdruckerei (German Federal Printing Office) and is currently on display at Trustech.
