Recently, China’s Defense Minister, in his first significant speech, made a statement saying that a war with the United States would be an “unbearable disaster” for the entire world.
General Li Shangfu stated at a security summit that “some countries” have been intensifying an arms race on the Asian continent.
However, General Li Shangfu stated that the world was huge for both the United States and China. Furthermore, he also emphasized the fact that both superpower nations must seek common ground. General Li Shangfu became China’s defense minister in March.

Internal accusations between the superpowers
The United States had accused a Chinese warship of conducting unsafe maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait.
The US Navy said a Chinese destroyer had sailed near one of its destroyers on Saturday. The Chinese destroyer forced him to reduce speed to avoid a collision. The US Navy said that during this event, a Canadian store was also sailing nearby.
China also disapproved of both nations for “deliberately causing risks.” The United States and Canada stated that they have been sailing where international law allows.
General Li Shangfu, in his speech, accused the United States of having a “Cold War mentality.” He said this was greatly increasing security-related risks.
General Li stated that China could not allow naval patrols by the United States and its allies as an excuse to enjoy shipping hegemony.
When General Li was asked about the incident in the Taiwan Strait, he stated that nations outside the region were causing tensions.
General Li spoke at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. The dialogue is the only annual security meeting in the Asia-Pacific area.
China’s capital has rejected a US request seeking direct military talks to protest the sanctions imposed by the United States on Chinese Defense Minister General Li in 2018 over the issue of weapons purchased from Russia.
Vedant Patel, deputy spokesman for the State Department in Washington, stated that the United States aspires to maintain “predictable” ties with China and say no to “any new Cold War.”
Vedant Patel also said that “Our competition should not lead to conflict.”
General Li Shangfu maintained a rather moderate tone. This means that the possibility of him with the American counterpart is there, however, Washington needs to remove all sanctions against General Li Shangfu, as a retired People’s Liberation Army officer Zhou Bo said.
Sanctions against General Li Shangfu
It was in 2018 when General Li Shangfu was sanctioned for the entry of military material through Russia. It was earlier this year that he began his five-year tenure as defense minister. However, the sanctions imposed on him do not allow him to travel to the United States. It should not be forgotten that the sanctions also make it difficult for General Li Shangfu to invite General Austin to China, as Mr. Zhou stated.
A statement from Mr Zhou said: “If the sanction exists, how can we talk? Sanctions have many consequences.”
Relations between Beijing and Washington in recent years
Washington and Beijing have not enjoyed peaceful relations in recent years. There are but a myriad of reasons that contribute to tensions. One of these important issues is China’s claim to Taiwan. Territorial disputes in the South China Sea are also worrying issues that have strained relations.
Lieutenant General Jing Jianfeng, a senior PLA official, declared that there was no scope for reaching an agreement on Taiwan. The man accused the United States of intrusive interference in the area.
On the other hand, the man points out the fact that Washington’s intention to increase the number of rotationally deployed troops in the area has the potential to increase the risk of a confrontation.
