[Updated] Bank Holidays in February 2023 List

RBI has released the complete list of holidays for the month of February. It is the only month that lasts less than 30 days and also has few holidays. There are only a few holidays in this month, such as Guru Ravidas Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Hazrat Ali, Valentine’s Day, Mahashivratri, etc., apart from the second and fourth Saturdays. However, not all public and private sector banks will be closed on those days.

About February

Both the Julian and Gregorian calendars place February as the second month of the year. The Latin term februum, meaning “purification”, is the source of the Roman month name Februaryius (February). Since the 29th day is called a leap day, the month has 28 days in common years and 29 days in leap years.

February 2023 holidays

A total of 4 holidays will be observed in February, excluding the second and fourth Saturdays of the month and Sundays. It should be noted that not all banks in all areas observe these holidays. Please see the table below for February 2023 holidays:

All the states

All Indian banks must remain closed on the second and fourth Saturday of every month, as well as on all Sundays, as per Reserve Bank of India norms. While the first, third and fifth Saturday of each month will remain active as usual.

Important holidays for February 2023

Hazrat Ali Jayanti (February 5, 2023)

The birthday of Ali ibn Abu Talib, whom Shia Muslims consider the first Imam and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, is celebrated as Hazrat Ali’s birthday. Consequently, this day is also known as the birthday of Imam Ali.

Guru RaviDas Jayanti (February 5, 2023)

Guru Ravidas’ birthday is known as Guru Ravidass Jayanti and is observed on Magh Purnima, the full moon day of the month of Magh. This special occasion is celebrated in India by people from all over the world.

Lu Ngai Ni (February 15, 2023)

The Naga tribes of Manipur, India, celebrate the seed sowing festival as Lui Ngai Ni. The celebration marks the beginning of the year for the Naga people and the beginning of the planting season. It has been a recognized state holiday since 1988.

MahaShivaratri (February 18, 2023)

An annual Hindu festival called Maha Shivaratri is held in honor of the god Shiva. The name also alludes to the night when Shiva dances the Tandava, a celestial dance. The day before the new moon of each month of the lunisolar Hindu calendar, there is a Shivaratri, or “night of Shiva.”

State Day (February 20, 2023)

Every year on February 20, the Indian state of Mizoram celebrates State Day as a public holiday. This local celebration pays tribute to the day in 1987 when Mizoram gained recognition as a state.

Losar (February 21, 2023)

Tibetan Buddhism celebrates Losar, also known as the Tibetan New Year, on this day. The celebration is a new year festival that takes place on the first day of the Tibetan lunisolar calendar. Depending on local customs, different dates are used to celebrate the holiday.
