Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is a premier engineering institute located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. 2. National Institute of Technology

The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are technical institutes owned by the central government of India, and governed by the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research Act, 2007. 4. Anna University

Anna University, named after C. N. Annadurai, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, is a public state university situated in Tamil Nadu, India, with its main campus located in Chennai. The university has a rich history that dates back to its establishment on 4 September 1978. The university comprises four colleges, namely The College of Engineering (CEG, Guindy Campus), The Alagappa College of Technology (ACT, Guindy Campus), The Madras Institute of Technology (MIT, Chromepet Campus) and The School of Architecture and Planning (SAP, Guindy Campus). Originally, Anna University was established in 1978, and the varsity’s structure and affiliation scope were repeatedly altered by various governments. In 2001, the Anna University Amendment Act of 2001 designated the former Anna University as an affiliating university, bringing all engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu under its purview, including six government engineering colleges, three government-aided private institutions, and 426 self-financed colleges. In 2007, the university was divided into six constituent universities: Anna University, Chennai; Anna University of Technology, Chennai; Anna University of Technology, Tiruchirappalli; Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore; Anna University of Technology Tirunelveli and Anna University of Technology, Madurai. The institutes were established in 2010. However, in 2011 and 2012, the universities were re-merged into a single affiliating university, with the four regional universities continuing to function as a regional campus of the university.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, also known as Amrita University, is a privately-owned deemed university headquartered in Ettimadai, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. It comprises 16 constituent schools spread across seven campuses in the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. The university was established in 1994 with the opening of the Amrita School of Engineering in Coimbatore by Mata Amritanandamayi Devi and is managed by her international humanitarian organization, Mata Amritanandamayi Math. The university was accredited as a deemed university by the UGC in 2003, making it one of the youngest institutions to receive such accreditation. The university has six campuses, including the Coimbatore campus established in 1994, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) in Kochi established in 1998, urban campuses in Bengaluru, and rural campuses in Amritapuri village, which also houses the university’s headquarters. In 2019, an engineering campus was opened in Chennai, and two healthcare campuses are currently under construction in Faridabad, Haryana and Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh.

6. S.R.M. Institute of Science and Technology

SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRM)IST, previously known as SRM University, is a private higher education institution located in Kattankulathur, Chengalpattu near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Initially established as SRM Engineering College in Kattankulathur in 1985, it was granted deemed university status in 2002. SRM Institute of Science and Technology has six campuses located in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and NCR Delhi. It includes four campuses in Tamil Nadu: Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Vadapalani, and Tiruchirappalli, one in Andhra Pradesh (Amaravati), and one in NCR Delhi. SRMIST is comprised of a College of Engineering and Technology, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, College of Science and Humanities, School of Management, and School of Law. SRMIST is one of the few institutions in India that offers a degree in Telecom studies. The SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Center, SRM Hotel, SRM Institute of Hotel Management, SRM Arts and Science College, SRM Law College, SRM Management College, Valliammai Engineering College, and Valliammai Polytechnic College are also located on the Kattankulathur campus, which is situated on a 250-acre site overlooking Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST Road), NH-32 and is approximately 35 km (22 mi) away from Chennai. The institute was renamed SRM University in 2006 but changed back to SRM Institute of Science and Technology in 2017 following a request by the UGC to remove the word “University” from the name.

7. Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education

Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education (KARE) is a private deemed-to-be-university located in Krishnankoil near Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu, India. It was formerly known as Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering and Kalasalingam University. KARE was established in 1984 by the Kalasalingam Anandam Ammal Charities, with “Kalvivallal” Thiru T. Kalasalingam as the founder chairman. It gained deemed-to-be-university status in 2006. However, in November 2017, following a directive by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the name was changed to Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education.

The campus is situated at Krishnankoil, which is 65 km (40 mi) south of Madurai and 10 km (6.2 mi) north of Srivilliputhur, in Madurai-Shenkottah National Highway (NH208). The location is at the foothills of the Western Ghats in a rural setting of Virudhunagar District. The campus is equipped with a range of sporting facilities, including an athletic track, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a football ground. It is also WiFi enabled and has a SunFire 4800 enterprise server, a SunFire T1000 server, six IBM Blade servers, four Wipro rack servers, six desktop servers (from HP and HCL), and nine TB of storage for the computing and storage needs of the faculty and students. The central server farm includes file servers, a database server, a mail server, a web server, a backup server, a proxy server, and an e-learning server.

In 2022, Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education was ranked 39 among engineering colleges by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

8. Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research Academy

SASTRA, which stands for Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy, is a private deemed university located in Thirumalaisamudram, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, India. It offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses in Engineering, Science, Education, Management, Law, and the Arts. The university was founded in 1984 as Shanmugha College of Engineering and was later renamed in 2001. The Srinivasa Ramanujam Center in Kumbakonam is attached to SASTRA. The campus spans over 232 acres (94 ha) of land and has a total built-up area of about 195,000 square metres (2,100,000 sq ft), with approximately 85,000 square metres (910,000 sq ft) allotted to hostels, quarters, and guest houses. SASTRA offers a total of 119 courses across ten streams.

SASTRA has received re-accreditation in the IV cycle with an ‘A++’ grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission. In 2020, the QS World University Rankings ranked SASTRA 451-500 in Asia. Additionally, SASTRA was ranked 38th among engineering colleges, 22nd among universities, 17th among law colleges, and 42nd overall in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2021. In 2011, software company Tata Consultancy Services recruited 1,755 students from SASTRA, setting a world record for the largest recruitment by any company from a single campus.

9. Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering

Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering, commonly known as SSN College of Engineering or simply SSN, is a private engineering college situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Founded by Shiv Nadar, the college is affiliated with Anna University and is an autonomous institute. It is certified to ISO 9001:2000 standard by the National Board of Accreditation. The college was granted autonomous status by UGC in March 2018. SSN College of Engineering was established in 1996 by Dr Shiv Nadar and was initially located in Thoraipakkam, Chennai. In 1998, it was shifted to a 230-acre campus in Kalavakkam on Rajiv Gandhi Salai. Padma Bhushan Dr Shiv Nadar actively participated in the college activities and donated Rs. 1 million worth of HCL shares to the college. SSN School of Advanced Software Engineering was started in 2001 in association with Carnegie Mellon University. In 2022, the college was ranked 48 among engineering colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and 96 overall.

10. Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology

Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, previously known as Sathyabama University, is a university located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It was established in 1987 by the late Jeppiaar as Sathyabama Engineering College and attained the status of a deemed university in 2001. The campus is spread over 400 acres and is situated in Sholinganallur, which is approximately 15 km away from Adyar in Chennai. The university is located on Rajiv Gandhi Salai, previously known as Old Mahabalipuram Road, also known as IT Corridor.

The university has received an ‘A’ Grade accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). It is also accredited by the National Buildings Organisation (NBO), with the latest accreditation being given to the Computer Science Engineering department. As per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), the university has been ranked 55th in engineering, 40th among universities, and 61st overall in 2021.
