How to unlock fishing in Skyrim
First, make sure you’re playing the anniversary edition of the game, which launched for PC and consoles in November 2021.

Another way is to simply go to the nearest merchant in the city you are in at the time. For us, eager to start fishing right away, we found a rod at Riverwood merchant Lucan. It is not expensive at all, with a value of 31 gold.
Of course, if you prefer to show off your craftsmanship, you can also make a fishing rod yourself. Head to the nearest forge and you can craft the rod using 1 iron ingot and firewood (both items are easy to purchase or find throughout your adventures). How to cast line and fish in Skyrim

Skyrim Fishing Spots Locations and Maps
Skyrim: Anniversary Edition may come with a new fishing mechanic, but it won’t be much help to players if they don’t know where they can find these new fishing spots and locations.
You’ll know you’ve found a fishing spot when you see a bucket of fish bait. It’s also helpful to find rivers and lakes and follow them, as they will often take you to new areas to explore and find fish.
The only downside is that you will take the longer route to find out where the fishing spots are.

How to display fish in your house in Skyrim

The way to display fish in your home is to first make sure that the house you are in allows you to build a basement extension, solely because aquariums and such cannot be placed anywhere other than inside the basement.
The basement extension is available in Hearthfire houses and a few others, such as the house in Solitude.
Once you’ve added the basement to your home, you’ll need to use the workbench to create aquarium displays and cabinets. Then, once this is done, you can move over to the aquarium screens/cabinets and add fish to them.
Final note: Unfortunately, you cannot fit two different types of fish inside your home aquarium cabinets.
What else do you need to know about fishing in Skyrim?
Here are some other tips and tricks that may be useful while fishing in Skyrim:
- When the water calms down and there are no bites around your line, it indicates that there are no fish to catch and you will have to wait 24 hours until you can fish there again.
- You won’t be able to be attacked while fishing, although you can still hear monsters/NPCs talking and growling if they are nearby…
- The book Line and Lure offers useful tips on fishing in Tamriel, such as when to take out the fish, what kind of fish you can find, and the benefits of fishing in the kitchen.
- Learning to fish is useful for survival mode, which also debuts in the Anniversary Edition, where it is a great way to get food quickly and easily.
- You can’t mark where fishing spots are, so we suggest installing the camp creation item from the Skyrim Content Creation Club and using it to mark fishing spots. You’ll be using a lot of leather straps and iron ingots, but it’s definitely worth it to keep an eye on these locations.
