Republic Day 2023: Every year Republic Day is celebrated with full enthusiasm on January 26. This year, India will celebrate its 74th Republic Day, which falls on Thursday.

The theme of this year’s Republic Day celebration is ‘participation of common people’. The main guest of the parade is Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, president of Egypt.

However, the Government of India has chosen to reserve the front row for special official guests this year, in 2023. The front row will be occupied by the Shramjeevis and their families, Kartavya Path maintenance workers and other residents of the neighborhood, like rickshaw drivers and vegetable sellers.

These moving exhibits portray scenes of activities of people in those states and the music and songs of that particular state accompany each exhibit. Each display highlights the multiplicity and prosperity of Indian culture and the entire spectacle adds a jovial feel to the occasion.

Republic Day of India: History

Although India was free on August 15, 1947, it affirmed itself as a democratic, republican and sovereign State with the adoption of the Constitution on January 26, 1950. 21 gun salutes and the display of the Indian national flag by the Dr. Rajendra Prasad announced the momentous birth of the Republic of India on that day. Later, January 26 was declared a national holiday and recognized as the Republic Day of India.

Republic Day of India: Beating Retreat Ceremony

The Beating Retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk on January 29 every year marks the conclusion of the four-day Republic Day revelry. The chief guest of the event is the President of India, who arrives in a cavalry unit accompanied by the “president’s bodyguards.”

“Overcoming the retreat” has become an act of national pride when the colors and banners are displayed. ‘Beating Retreat’ marks a centuries-old martial tradition, when troops finished the fight, sheathed their weapons, withdrew from the battlefield and returned to the camps at dusk to the sound of the Retreat. The ceremony creates longing for times past.
