Pokémon Go Mega Sceptile counters, weaknesses and moveset explained

Mega Sceptile is the Mega Evolved form of Sceptile and one of the best Grass-type Mega Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

This is a fan favorite thanks to the fact that it is the final evolution of the titular Hoenn, Treecko. Along with Mega Swampert and Mega Blaziken, these three beloved Pokémon offer extremely powerful options in Pokémon Go.

Like all Mega Evolutions, Mega Sceptile cannot be caught directly in Pokémon Go. Instead, you must continue defeating it in Mega Raids until you have collected enough Mega Sceptile Energy for its temporary evolution. Thanks to the Summer 2022 Mega Raid rebalance, this can now be done in a Mega Raid if you defeat it quickly enough!

Below you will find the counters and weaknesses of Mega Sceptile that will help you succeed in Pokémon Go; Just remember that you need to have a Sceptile in your Pokemon storage in order to mega evolve it.

Cons and weaknesses of Mega Sceptile in Pokémon Go

The fastest way to collect Mega Sceptile energy is to defeat one in a Mega Raid. Below are Mega Sceptile’s counters and weaknesses that will help you achieve this:

  • Mega Sceptile Types: Grass and Dragon
  • Mega Sceptile is weak against: Ice (2x), Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Flying and Poison.
  • Mega Sceptile is resistant to: Earth (2x), Electricity, Grass and Water
  • Mega Sceptile Mega Counters: Mega Glalie or Mega Abomasnow with dual Ice-type attacks will be the strongest option here, given Mega Sceptile’s double weakness to Ice. But failing that, Mega Salamence will deal massive damage; Just keep in mind that it’s just as weak to Mega Sceptile if it runs any Dragon-type attacks!
  • Non-Mega Mega Sceptile Counters: Ice is by far the most important thing here because the damage boost when you see the words “double weak” is real. Double iced Mamoswine or Galarian Darmanitan is the way to go. Kyurem with Dragon Breath and Glaciate is your best Legendary option, though Mewtwo with Ice Beam is decent. Still, Glaceon and Weavile with double Ice outclass Mewtwo, which shows just how powerful it is to exploit a double weakness.
  • Mega Aerodactyl, Rampardos and Rhyperior are your three best counters

  • Number of Players to Beat Mega Sceptile: Theoretically, Mega Sceptile can be defeated by a single player if you have a team of maxed out top-tier Ice-type attackers. However, this is a lofty goal for most players. As with most Mega Pokémon, three players at level 40 is totally reasonable, and five players at level 30 should be fine, as long as you bring the right Pokémon into battle!
  • Tactics: Ice, ice, baby! Exploiting this double weakness of Ice will cause Mega Sceptile to retire in no time. Bring a strong Mega to power up your friends’ Pokémon in the raid and you shouldn’t have too much difficulty defeating this Pokémon.

The Best Mega Sceptile Moveset in Pokémon Go

Mega Sceptile can use a variety of fast and charged moves in Pokémon Go. Mega Sceptile’s best moves would be the combination of Bullet Seed (Fast) and Frenzy (Charged) in raids as a Grass-type attacker. Sceptile isn’t that great in Go Battle League, so don’t worry about adding a second charged move. Save your Stardust to level it up!

Everything we know about Sceptile

The Forest Pokémon Sceptile is one of Hoenn’s Grass-type starter Pokémon from Generation 3. By acquiring the Dragon type, it joins its compatriots Mega Sceptile and Mega Blaziken in being a dual-type Pokémon.

This fan favorite is clearly inspired by geckos. You can read the official Pokédex entries for these Pokémon below:

  • Treecko: ‘Treecko has small hooks on the bottom of his feet that allow him to climb vertical walls. This Pokémon attacks by hitting enemies with its thick tail.
  • Grovyle: ‘The leaves that grow on Grovyle’s body are convenient for camouflaging him from enemies in the forest. This Pokémon is a master at climbing trees in the jungles.
  • Skeptile: ‘The leaves that grow on Sceptile’s body have very sharp edges. This Pokémon is very agile: it jumps over tree branches and pounces on its enemy from above or from behind.

For those looking for a shiny, you’ll be happy to know that the shiny Treecko, Grovyle, and Sceptile were released on Treecko Community Day in March 2019. As a result, Mega Sceptile is also in the game!

Shiny Treecko changes his lime green to a light teal color. Its darker green tail turns red. Its evolution, Grovyle, goes from a darker forest green to a mint green, while Sceptile completely changes course and opts for an aqua color. While this makes it look like a Water-type, it looks amazing, so no one is really complaining. This color is preserved with the bright Mega Sceptile, which makes us incredibly happy.

Good luck defeating Mega Sceptile in Pokémon Go!
