13th National Voter’s Day 2023: Celebrated on January 25. The main objective behind the celebration is to encourage, facilitate and maximize registration, especially for new voters. The day has been celebrated since 2011 across the country to commemorate the founding of the Election Commission of India, i.e. January 25, 1950.
It is celebrated every year with a particular theme. It not only encourages young people to participate in the electoral process but also focuses on the right to vote as a basic right.

History of National Voters Day
January 25 is the founding day of the Election Commission of India (ECI), which came into existence in 1950. This day was first celebrated in 2011 to encourage young voters to participate in the electoral process. It is undoubtedly the day to celebrate the right to vote and also democracy in India. The main objective of the Election Commission is to increase the registration of voters, especially the eligible ones.
Let us tell you that earlier the voter eligibility age was 21 years but in 1988 it was reduced to 18 years. The Sixty-First Amendment Bill of 1998 lowered the age of eligibility for voting in India.

Importance of National Voters Day
India is a democratic country. Every citizen has the basic right to vote. He or she has the right to select the leader from whom he or she believes that he or she is capable of leading the nation, solving the problems of the common people, bringing about change, etc. National Voters Day is an important root of India, as the future of the country lies in the leader we elect.
Think about it once, if we do not move forward and elect the right leader, the progress and development of the country will be hampered and it will also affect the people of the country. It is the leader of the country who decides several big basic projects and various things. If the basic system is not developed properly, it may cause lack of road construction, electrical connection problems, etc. Therefore, we must encourage the youth to participate and build a strong network for the next generation who will ensure they cast their votes without fail.

Why do we celebrate National Voters Day?
This year, the Honorable President of India, Draupadi Murmu, will present the National Awards for the year 2022. To mark the occasion, National Awards for Best Electoral Practices for the year 2022-23 will be awarded to state and district level officials. The awards are given for outstanding performance in conducting elections in various spheres including IT initiatives, security management, election management, accessible elections and contribution in the field of voter awareness and outreach. These awards will also be given to important stakeholders like government departments, ECI icons and media groups for their valuable contribution towards voter awareness.
The new voters would also be congratulated and given their Voter Photo Identity Card (EPIC).
An ECI publication “Election of the First President: An Illustrated Chronicle of the Indian Presidential Elections” will be published. The book is the first publication of its kind and offers glimpses into the historical journey of the presidential elections in the country.
An ECI song “Main Bharat Hoon- Hum Bharat Ke Matdata Hain” produced by ECI in association with Subhash Ghai Foundation will also be screened. The song highlights the power of voting and celebrates the spirit of inclusive, accessible, ethical, participatory and festive elections in the world’s largest and most vibrant democracy.

Where can a person vote?
Generally, the electoral commission allows a person to vote in the place where he or she resides or lives. If voting is carried out from two or more different places, it is considered a crime and you must notify the Electoral Commission every time you change your place of residence. In other words, we can say that it is a crime. When a person turns 18 years of age, as a citizen of India, he or she can register as a voter. In addition, the Electoral Commission reviews electoral rolls every five years and also before elections. At the time of voting, there is no need to carry a voter ID, you can carry your PAN card, driving license, Adhaar card, etc.
Therefore, we can say that National Voter Day is an important day celebrated in India every year on January 25 to create awareness among the youth so that they can cast their vote to a responsible person and participate in the development of the country. .
