Today, sky watchers witnessed the hybrid solar eclipse in Australia and parts of Southeast Asia. The eclipse passed over the Indian and Pacific oceans. This hybrid solar eclipse is named after an Australian coast ‘Ningaloo’. A solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon and Earth align fully or partially. This phenomenon casts a shadow on Earth and obscures the bright face of the Sun. NASA warned viewers that it is not safe to look directly at the Sun during most of the eclipse without specialized eye protection.

There are different types of eclipses such as total, annular, hybrid and partial.

– In a total eclipse, the Moon completely blocks the Sun. This allows sky watchers to see the star’s corona, its outer atmosphere.

– In an annular eclipse, the Moon aligns perfectly with the Sun. However, this time it is further from the Earth’s surface and does not completely cover the face of the Sun.

– Hybrid eclipses go from annular to total due to the curve of our planet.

– In partial eclipses, the Moon is not completely aligned with the Sun, only partially covering its bright side.
