Maroon 5 is an American pop rock band from Los Angeles, California. The band consists of vocalist Adam Levine, rhythm guitarist and keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, lead guitarist James Valentine, drummer Matt Flynn, keyboardist PJ Morton and multi-instrumentalist and bassist Sam Farrar. The band’s origins date back to 1994, when original members Levine, Carmichael, bassist Mickey Madden and drummer Ryan Dusick banded together to form Kara’s Flowers in high school.
Following the release of their independent album “We Like Digging?” to lukewarm reception, Maroon 5 signed a deal with Reprise Records. In 1997, they released Fourth World. However, the album was poorly received, causing the band to leave the label.
Members then turned their attention to universities. It wasn’t until 2001 that the band resurfaced as Maroon 5, taking a different musical direction and introducing guitarist James Valentine. Signed to independent label Octone Records and a joint venture with J Records, they released their debut album, Songs About Jane, in June 2002.
Fueled by the success of hit singles such as “Harder to Breathe”, “This Love” and “She Will Be Loved”, the album peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 chart and achieved quadruple platinum status in 2005. That same year, Maroon 5 won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. In 2006, drummer Ryan Dusick left the band due to serious wrist and shoulder injuries, and was replaced by Matt Flynn.
