The World Steel Association, as every year, has announced the name Steel Sustainability 2023. A total of 10 companies are recognized as Steel Sustainability Champions for their exemplary work. For the sixth consecutive year, the Steel Sustainability Champions Program has recognized those members of the global steel industry who best exemplify their dedication and action in support of sustainable development through their participation in global steel sustainability initiatives.
Tata Steel has managed to keep its name in the list for the sixth consecutive year. The company shared its achievement on its Twitter account:

What is the Steel Sustainability Championship Program?
A company’s ability to continue operating must adhere to sustainability as a fundamental business requirement. For forward-thinking steel companies, adopting an ethical and socially responsible philosophy can give them an advantage over the competition.
To motivate steel companies to try harder, create better standards and move the industry forward, the World Steel Organization established a sustainability recognition scheme. A project is a useful tool to show the industry’s strongest and most proactive commitment to sustainable development.
The different categories of the Steelie Awards are:
- Excellence in low carbon steel production
- Innovation of the year
- Excellence in sustainability
- Excellence in life cycle assessment
- Excellence in education and training.
- Excellence in communication programs.
One must be shortlisted in one of the six categories of the international Steel Steelie Awards or recognized by the Health and Safety Recognition Program to be eligible for the Steel Sustainability Championship.

What are the objectives of the Steel Sustainability Program?
The Steel Sustainability Program recognizes the sector for meeting its various sustainability objectives. And the main goal is to reduce carbon emissions and help the Planet Mark certification program obtain and maintain certification.
The main focuses of the organization and the program are:
- A circular economy and carbon neutrality are promoted while efficiently reducing emissions.
- Raise awareness of ethical product supply chains and global mineral and product supply chains.
- The life cycle costing (LCC) method to evaluate the social and economic impact of a product.
- Application of the 4 R’s Reduce, Reuse, remanufacture and recycle.
- Water can be recycled and reused, increasing the efficiency of its use while reducing demand and costs.
- The steel sector should recognize the importance of problems related to atmospheric emissions and their effects on the environment, human health and ambient air quality.

The World Steel Association, with members in all major steel-producing countries, is one of the largest and most active business associations in the world. It represents around 85% of global steel production, together with steel producers, national and local steel industry groups, steel research institutions and steel producers.
