The 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League is nearing its end. After an exciting league stage, next up are the playoffs. The four playoff teams have finished after an incredible battle for qualification, in which seven teams fought to stay in title contention until the final week.
However, only 3 prevailed. The Gujarat Titans had qualified first for the playoffs, having won most of their games. Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians are the other teams that managed to secure a place in the playoff matches.

Fan favorites Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians were neck and neck in the points table till the last four games. CSK and LSG had a 97% chance of qualifying, and the whole problem was the fourth position in the IPL 2023 points table.
In the end, it was MI that ended up making the playoffs. Fans expect more intense games in the upcoming playoffs and the final of IPL 2023.
IPL 2023 Playoffs Rules
- Four teams at the top of the IPL table after the league matches qualify for the playoffs. This has become more challenging after the addition of two more IPL 2022 teams.
- The two best teams participate in Qualifier 1 and the bottom two play in Qualifier 1.
- The winner of Qualifier 1 goes directly to the final, while the loser plays the winner of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2.
- As such, all teams hope to reach the top two of the IPL points table to have two chances to qualify for the finals.
IPL 2023 Playoffs: Schedule and Venue
- Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants and Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians are the teams that have qualified for the IPL playoffs.
- The 2023 IPL playoffs schedule has been announced in advance with the first qualifying match taking place on May 23, the Eliminator on May 24 and Qualifier 2 on May 26.
- Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings faced each other in Qualifier 1. CSK won the match by 15 runs and went straight to the final.
- The knockout match was played on May 24 between Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians. MI thrashed LSG and won by 81 runs.
- Qualifier 2 took place on May 26 between the loser of Q1 (GT) and the winner of the Eliminator match (MI). GT won by 62 races.
- IPL 2023 Qualifier 1 and Playoff will be played in Chennai, while the last two matches (Q2 and Final) will be played in Ahmedabad.
- The IPL 2023 final will be played on Sunday, May 28, 2023 between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans.
The road to the IPL 2023 playoffs
- As of now, Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians have qualified for the playoffs.
- Fourth position in the table was at stake until the last league match. Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians were most likely to secure the final playoff spot.
- Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, who remained at the bottom of the points table for most of the tournament, were eliminated long ago. PBKS and KKR soon followed.
- RCB played their last match on May 21 but failed to win despite Virat Kohli’s remarkable century.
- Rajasthan Royals had a chance of securing the fourth position in the unlikely scenario of both MI and RCB losing their final games, but even then, the NRR would have been the deciding factor.
- Unfortunately for RR fans, the team was eliminated after MI won the match against SRH. And since RCB also lost against GT, MI advanced to the playoffs.

IPL 2023 Finals: CSK vs Gujarat Titans
- Chennai Super Kings once again reached the final of the IPL. CSK will play their 10th IPL final on May 28 against the winner of Qualifier 2.
- CSK beat Gujarat Titans by 15 runs. Having won the toss, GT decided to bowl and restricted CSK to 172/7. However, CSK bowlers were on top and managed to bowl out the entire GT team in 20 overs for 157 runs.
- MS Dhoni has guided his team to a wonderful IPL run which will hopefully culminate in lifting the trophy.
- However, Gujarat Titans had another chance to qualify for the final – some advantages of achieving the first position in the points table.
- GT took on Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2023 and completely outplayed the five-time champions.
- GT won by 62 races. Mohit Sharma was the MVP of the game, having dismissed Suryakumar Yadav and recorded a rare five-wicket haul.

IPL 2023 Qualifiers: Playoff β LSG vs MI
- The much-awaited Eliminator game of the IPL 2023 playoffs will take place between Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians. LSG finished third in the points table, while MI narrowly qualified in fourth place. But that is common in MI, and the team often rises from the bottom to win the IPL title.
- LSG also qualified for last year’s playoffs. Mumbai Indians last won the IPL trophy in 2020. MI has won the IPL five times and reached the playoff stage 10 times.
- LSG has a strong team and maintained its lead in the points table for most of the league. MI boasts some of the best chasing performances in IPL 2023. They have chased multiple totals of over 200.
- All in all, the LSG vs MI game is sure to be packed with drama, excitement and edge-of-the-seat cricket action. Chepauk Stadium is also known to favor batsmen, so expect a high run total on the scoreboard.

Mumbai Indians beat Lucknow Supergiants in playoffs
- Mumbai Indians put on a show for all ages at Chepauk. Batting first, MI posted 182/8 on the scoreboard.
- LSG got off to a good start and a partnership was forming between Marcus Stoinis and captain Krunal Pandya as the MI players attacked with all their might.
- Akash Madhwal recorded the most incredible bowling figures in IPL history – 5/5 in 3.3 overs.
- The entire LSG squad was dismissed for 101 runs in 16.3 overs and MI advanced to Qualifier 2.
