Why is Army Day celebrated in India?
India achieved independence on August 15, 1947, after nearly 200 years of slavery under British rule. At the time of India’s independence, the country was experiencing communal riots, refugees were coming from Pakistan and some people were migrating towards Pakistan.
Due to this kind of anarchic atmosphere, many administrative problems began to arise when the army had to intervene to control the situation in order to ensure peace during partition.
At the time of Indian independence, command of the Indian Army was in the hands of British General Sir Francis Butcher. So this was the right time to hand over full control of the country to the Indians; Therefore, Field Marshal KM Cariappa became the first Indian Army Chief of independent India on 15 January 1949.
Since this opportunity was very notable for the Indian Army, it was decided to celebrate this great day every year in India as Army Day and since then this tradition has continued.
Hence the transfer of power from the army into the hands of an Indian citizen on January 15 is marked as Army Day in the country.
It is celebrated every year at all the Army Command headquarters and in the national capital by organizing army parades that include many other military spectacles.

To celebrate Army Day, the parade is organized every year at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment. The salute is received by the chief of the Indian army. In the year 2018, the 70th Army Day was celebrated, in which General Bipin Rawat performed the parade salute, and in 2019 it was performed by General MM Narwane.

It was the first time in history that a woman officer will lead an Army contingent in the Army Day parade. Lieutenant Bhawana Kasturi has become the first female officer to lead a contingent made up of 144 male officers.

Sam Manekshaw was the first Indian Field Marshal and was awarded this title in January 1973. The second person to be awarded the title of Field Marshal was ‘Konderera M. Cariappa’, who was awarded the rank on 14 January of 1986.
